Her daughter is really really short, and a good example of why I always ask the age rather than guessing (though usually I'm confronted with children who are much taller than I'd expect, not much shorter).

On the subject of people who fall out of the norm making up for falling out of the norm by being good in some way. I am of the opinion that this holds true for all of us, that in general people weigh our perceived flaws against our merits, only it is not mentioned unless people fall outside the norm in a very obvious way, since it's not particularly noticeable otherwise. Also, if the flaw is not a recognised disability, people don't mention this weighing much, such as in the case of people who are considered more than a little unsightly.
