The [CBS-NYT] poll also found that Americans were divided over one of the hottest issue in the campaign, a gasoline tax suspension. Forty-nine percent think lifting the tax is a bad idea, while 45 percent approve of the plan.

I'm surprised that only 45% of the country is stupid!

Me too!

Or, rather, I'm surprised that only 45% of the country is looking out for their short-term interests instead of their long-term ones - that's not exactly stupid, so I don't want to say that. It's just not as clever as it might be.

(But honestly, that tax is really low, isn't it? I didn't know, because I never am in a position to buy gas, but... only 37¢ per gallon, isn't it? Seriously? No matter how much you drive, how inefficient your vehicle is, I doubt that'll make or break your budget.)

I was talking about this with my family and a few friends over the last few days. My friends think it's a terrible idea (short term solution to long term problem), my parents think it's a pretty good one (their reasoning being that "anything that eases the pain of rising gas prices is a good plan".).

...They are otherwise highly intelligent people, I promise.

You can't blame them for being short-sighted. The whole culture encourages us to be short-sighted, buying new instead of fixing old and all that.

The funny thing is, this is one of the few areas where they are shortsighted. These are the same people who encouraged me as a child to save "Just a little every day, it adds up over time." and who have never thrown away something they thought could be fixed and reused.

Unless it's clothing. They seem horrified by my Goodwill habit.

Fortunately, most of their friends are firmly with me, so I still hold hope that they will see the error of their ways in this.

Sooner or later the gas will have to run out - people do keep saying we've already hit peak oil, after all, and consumption does seem to keep increasing - so it won't matter anymore.

We can only hope we're ready with some other plan before then.

I hope so, too. In the meantime, I keep my bike tires inflated, walk whenever I can, and pray for better public transit than what I've got.
