And I heard this scuttling noise above me. I knew at once what it was - a squirrel. Much too much to be a mouse, and nothing else fits between floor and ceiling in my room. There's some sort of small entrance that squirrels and such occasionally have come in through.

As it happens, there's also currently a hole in my ceiling between my room and my sister's. So here I am, at 4am, woken up by a scurrying back and forth and going, very drowsily, "drat that squirrel" when all of a sudden I'm jolted entirely awake by a very loud, sickening THUMP.

So I get up, and turn on the light - and don't see anything. Turn off the light. The squirrel that I didn't see starts moving around. Light goes on - and I just see it trying to get around the walls of my room. It's walking very low to the floor, so it's either sick, severely injured, or really trying to avoid notice - three reasons to avoid it.

So I decided I really could let this one wait until morning, carefully closed all the doors in my room, and went to sleep in my mother's room - she's working nights right now.

By morning, the squirrel was dead. I left it (opening my window), and finally dealt with it now, poor thing. Squirrels are a lot heavier than I'd expect. Explains why the thump was so loud.

Wait, the squirrel fell out of the ceiling INTO YOUR ROOM? And then died? That is bizarre. I found a dead squirrel once and made a windchime out of his bones.

P.S. You do not eat the bones, but this was the icon that seemed to best fit your post.

If a squirrel fits, a rat probably would as well, after all, they are masters of tight spaces.
