Ugh. I don't like the fact that my prime minister is going to be preventing draft dodgers from claiming asylum. What happened to conciencious objectors being able to claim refuge?
...and exactly WHY do we need a military draft all of a sudden?
I'm... absolutely speechless.
Personally, I'm of the belief that drafts actually lower the overall competency of the military to some degree. In my view, it seems better to have a smaller military made up of those who are actually good at what they're doing than to have a bunch of inept folks like myself who are so emotionally overloaded that we'd have difficulty firing on the enemy and so directionally impaired we'd end up attacking our own barracks.
::grumbles, mutters:: I also detest the people who say things to the effect that you'll never understand what it's like for those in the military until you've been there. I respect the people in the military, but from everything I've seen of it (dramatizations and documentaries alike), I would not want to subject myself to such a life. It's just not the sort of thing that my personality type is suited for, really...
::sigh:: I really ought to post a rant on this to my own blog whenever I get the chance. I don't tend to post many political rants, but this one's really got me in a rather annoyed mood.
Not sure whether an autism-spectrum diagnosis can disqualify one from military service, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case... I need to do more research into that.
I have heard that having been on stimulants for ADHD in the past is grounds for rejection in the draft, and since I was on Ritalin a while back, that's nice to know...
I was wondering about this earlier - would my atrocious eyesight be bad enough to keep me out should conscription ever be reintroduced in this country. I dunno about the aspergers though. I'm sure 'traditional' autism would keep you out, but aspergers? Less sure.
Never have I been more glad that we're only nominally the 51st state...
