I've been following the burgeoning research on sleep disorders and depression. (Short form: it seems that maybe depression (or some depression) is a sleep disorder and not the other way around, which is how it's been understood.) It stands to reason that if what this says about the biology of teens is true -- and heaven knows, I have no reason to think it isn't -- then the chronic disruption of their natural sleep schedule should lead to elevated rates of depression and possibly other mental illnesses. I wonder if anyone has studied school start times and prevalence of depression and (on a hunch) ADHD.
