Now, a family friend suggested that if I wash the sucker, I can then rebrine it, properly.

I'm not too sure about this.

What do you all think?

Nope. If it was brined, the salt etc. should have gotten into the meat where it shouldn't wash out. That said, I believe that Lynne Rosetto Kasper talked about accidentally re-brining an already brined turkey and said that it came out okay. (The Splendid Table, on NPR.) So you might be able to do a secondary brining of sorts.

No. It will remove some of the salt, but the chemical actions (salt unwinding the proteins in the meat) has taken place.
