And this close to Halloween, there's not much point, but next year I'll know about it in advance and I'll be able to do something at the start of the month, instead of the very end.

This reminds me. I haven't given out candy since 2001. I mean, it was 2001, and it rained that year anyway, and nobody came to our door. So now, I not only have way too much candy (no idea how many people stop by - this year, I'll make a list, and next year I'll have the right amount of candy for the little ones and costumed people, as well as the right amount of raisins and toothbrushes for the older kids who don't dress up because it's for their "baby sister"), but I'm not sure if I got the right variety here.

So, you tell me - what is *your* favorite type of candy (either very specific or very vague, whatever) that I might buy for Halloween? What about least favorite? If you're an adult, and you have kids, ask them, post their replies.

I admit to ToTing more for the fun of walking around and showing off my costume then for the candy. I may still have some from 2001 sitting around. So with that in mind... I steer clear of chocolate cause it tends to go bad, despite what certain ancient M&M eating relatives believe. Snickers and Reeses cups are my favorite if it has to be cocolate, cause you can freeze em. I always like hard candies like Jolly Ranchers. And Candy Corn, that's a classic. I don't think I ever eat anything gummy. I'm just not a gummy fan, and most of the cheesy gummy things you get for Halloween taste bad.

Worst thing I've ever gotten while ToTing is a Chick track though.

I like raisins too.

It was one made for Halloween, something about being the devil's holiday and so on. And Trick or Treating being evil. I threw it away ages ago.

Twizzlers! (those little two-packs) or some manner of gummi candy. Chocolate's all well and good, but it seems like everyone just gets the variety pack of miniature chocolate bars these days, and it's nice to mix it up with other candies. Or those caramel squares...mm.

What I hated most were Rockets (I don't know if they're the same thing in the States - those cheap chalky versions of Sweet Tarts) and candy necklaces/bracelets.

My favorites, taste-wise, are the non-chocolate Tootsie Rolls (vanilla, lemon, ect) or things with peanut butter in them, but the treats I get the biggest kick out of are the various Halloween-themed ones. Getting candy shaped like spiders or monsters or body parts always amused me, even though the quality usually isn't all that great.

I also loved the one neighbor who gave out hot apple cider, but I'm not sure if it's the sort of thing most people will be willing to accept from you if they don't already know you fairly well. As for bad treats... giving out raisins always backfired for me because I like them. The only things I really hated were licorice (which I just gave to my mother), and pennies.

I don't think you have those much in the US, but hard pepper candies are the best kind of candy. One variety, which is popular enough to be "Wikipedia-ed", but is not at all the most delicious kind out there is Turkish Pepper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrkisk_Peber)

Obviously.

Still, if you ever happen across one of these, I really do recommend them.

i like nut free chocolate the best. kira likes lollipops and m&ms the best. last year, kira got a lot of gum, jaw breakers and hard candy. no one in our house eats those (and especially not kira, who was *just* 2 at the time) so those got thrown away.

My favorite is candy corn. It's one of those things that makes autumn great.

And personally, I don't think you're ever too old to prefer candy over a toothbrush for Halloween.

My favorites are things like the small versions of 100 Grand, Snickers, Baby Ruth, or similar "layered" candy that involves a soft middle, crispy bits, and chocolate in any order. I'll very happily eat them at my desk, but I think it's great fun to freeze them and eat one layer at a time. :)

I also used to love a discontinued form of Twix that used fudge in place of the caramel -- it was perfect for eating a layer at a time at room temperature.
