But right now, just a quick list on Things My Nieces Can Do Around the House.
I make no promises that they do any of this well, or that I always am perfect about remembering to involve them (or even doing it myself for a lot of these)... but these are things they can do. Listed items, Angelique can do. Listed with an asterisk, and the baby can do them too.
In their room:
Bedmaking
Put away their toys*
Put away their books*
Turn on their nightlight*
Put their clothes in the hamper*
Undress themelves*
Dress themselves
In the kitchen:
Wash fruits and vegetables, standing on a chair (Evangeline could do this with help)
Wash rice, if we ever did that (we don't)
Use the vegetable peeler, with supervision
Use the grater, with supervision (Evangeline can do this with help)
Stir*
Scoop*
Fill a measuring cup to a certain level
Level a measure of something*
Chop, with my hand on theirs
Press buttons on appliances
Help wash dishes*
Take things from the fridge and pantry*
Put things back in the fridge or spice rack or pantry*
Identify some spices and herbs, fresh or dried*
Use the garlic press
Grease a pan
Mash potatoes
Pour from a measuring spoon*
Pour from a carton or bottle without spilling
Wipe down the table*
Set the table*
Scrape their plates and put them in/next to the sink (the baby can do this alone, more or less, but she likes the help and I like the backup)
Put birdseed out* (not that we have in a while)
Go downstairs and send messages or retrieve wayward ingredients/cookware
Refill the pepper grinder
In general:
Put on shoes by themselves
Sweep, using a broom*
Sweep, using a dustpan and brush (the baby can do either or, not both)
Mop (yes, really - Angelique once used the mop, unbeknownst to me or her mom, to clean up a spill she'd made. She was trying to be helpful - and she really was! I mean, she missed a lot, but still)
Spraybottle things and wipe them down*
Sort and organize (laundry, that sort of thing)
Fold laundry*
Pick out outfits
Put things into/out of the bag for me*
Fetch diapers, throw them away afterwards*
I'm sure there's more, and it's skipping all the other, non-householdy things they can manage for themselves.
