And now, for today's semi-related Ana-cdotes:
We saw an amputee today. Or Ana did - I was a little preoccupied. But I know she did, because she turned to me and said "CONNIE! That man's legs falled off!"
Me: Uh, yeah, I guess so.
Ana: I didn't know legs could fall off!
Me: Yeah, they must have been amputated.
Ana: THAT'S SO COOOOOOOOOOOOL!
Me: Uh... yeah.
Ana happens to be acquainted with the neighbor of one of her friends. Neighbor-girl has seriously atrophied legs. Ana thinks this girl is *really cool*. (Well, she's six, and Ana's four, so of course Ana thinks she's cool.) This girl has a wheelchair, but the one time I met her, it seemed she prefered to go about on her hands. (Which is just as well. In the wheelchair, all three other kids present wanted to hold her hand and she's only got two of them, and once we beat the other kids back with a stick she had to wheel her own chair around anyway.) Jenn and I (and probably Ana) think of this as one of the coolest things ever. She is completely able to get around and win races and all that. Hard having a conversation with that kid, she's always off and about and running off from her responsible adult. I had to find out third-hand how old she is, because I couldn't stop her long enough to ask. (And that's one of the first questions you ask a kid, y'know.)
And the day I met her, I got to hear somebody tell her kid, so well-meaningly, that the fact that this kid she doesn't know has no workable legs is "sad". This woman clearly did not see the girl running about and laughing with her own personal fan club. (Okay, they're all half her age, but that is beside the point, I should think.)
