Guess what I just saw today?
A knife-sharpening man! In a van! Driving around the block ringing a bell!
I ran back to tell my mom, and she searched around for something to have sharpened. As it happens, we had two very rusty pruning shears (and a jungle of a backyard, so those shears are coming in handy - before, it was just "share around the one working set"), so I ran out to get them fixed. And it only cost me $10 for one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life, ever.
I only regret that I didn't think to drag Deniz out to see it as well. She might not get the chance again. Well, if I should happen to hear his bell later, I'll bring him a pair of scissors that have been rusted since forever, and make Deniz watch *then*. She's entertaining herself watching worms right now in the garden. (The garden is mostly pokeberries, so it comes up easily and the kids can help.)
My grandfather used to do that, I'm told, but I'd never seen one, and my mother hadn't in years.
