It was old even when I read it - a back issue of my dad's.

And there was this article about some "new" technology which would allow a phone to ring differently depending on who was calling. Amazing, right?

But the researcher interviewed said that they would do simple three or four note rings - not music, because they'd found that this was "really annoying".

...

Boy, were they ever right.

So, I've got my new phone, right? And although I've done everything I can to make every possible call come in using a normal ringer, apparently the default ring for contacts added to my list is always going to be this annoying musical ring. Even though I've set my ring to just be "telephone" instead of "annoying music", contacts are automatically assigned a "special" ring, which defaults to the annoying music. I have to scroll down to the bottom to make it normal.

This is driving me batty. All I want is a phone that rings, or possibly vibrates. That's all. Instead, I get annoyances.

*sighs*

daniel had a phone once that didn't even HAVE a normal ringer. it had a twinkly repeating sound that was the closest thing to a ringer. drove both of us nuts. a phone without a ringing sound? ugh.

A little off the direct topic, but I can't stand the normal ringing sound of a phone, cellular or otherwise. I actually physically cringe when I hear my home phone ring, and tend to have about the same reaction when my cell or anyone else's rings.

I don't know what it is, but I have an actual aversion to any sudden, unnatural sounds. Phones, beeping or clicking sounds on a computer (I have mine set to complete silence, and have the speakers on mute 90% of the time), alarm clocks, you name it. I've actually found myself squirming and whimpering when my alarm goes off in the morning and I can't find the snooze button.

All this to say that if I absolutely have to hear cell phones ringing I atcually prefer the musical ones because I find them to make me less uncomfortable because music is much more welcome to me than a harsh ringing.

You can't set it to vibrate? I'm not surprised it's obnoxious with the ringer, but I'm surprised it doesn't have a vibrate setting. Is it a Samsung?

Can you not alter the settings in the profiles? I always assumed this was a standard behaviour in phones. Perhaps I'm too spoilt by Nokia.

Oh, I totally hear you on that! >.< (No pun intended, LOL.) It seems like every cell phone service these days seems to think that people only want to hear music for their ring tones, instead of what sounds like a traditional phone. In spite of the fact that a lot of the music, being based on MIDI files and such, sound like utter crap when played from most phones.

I once had a lovely discussion with T-Mobile about their crappy selection of "normal"-sounding ringtones available for download. They didn't seem to be able to comprehend that *gasp* there could possibly be at least one person who doesn't want to hear a bastardized version of a Top 40 hit, or somesuch. =P

Thankfully, I have access to the wireless web and a Unix server, where I can just upload MIDIs of decent-sounding ringtones and then download them to my phone.
