Ugh. Ugh, ugh, UGH.
Sep. 22nd, 2006 10:28 amNote to self: You already knew never to use Apple Car Service, you should have told Rachel.
I was visiting with Rachel and Elliot yesterday until 5:30 or so. (They gave me chocolate.) Then I realized how late it was, so I dashed off a quick call to 'dul telling him we were going to be really late getting home and my phone was dying, and asked Rachel to call car service for us. Taking two busses during rush hour is hell.
She doesn't know about car services on the island, so she dithered around for awhile before picking a number at random. Yes, Apple's number. They said they'd be there in 10 minutes, and then hung up on her. We all get our shoes on and pack up and discuss how to get Elliot to stop screaming that he wants to come with us... and then Ana and I go sit on the stoop to wait for the car.
Minutes pass. By 15 minutes after the call, Rachel and Elliot (now calmed) are out there with us, waiting. A good ten minutes after that, we call Apple again. "Oh, they'll be there in a few minutes *click*"
So we wait. And wait. And discuss calling another call service, and find another random number, and call them, explaining that by now it was so late we'd just take the first car, even if it was Apple. They say they'll take forever, and we're better waiting. So we do wait. And wait.
Now I'm really pissed - and it's really late, too! So I suggest we call my mom to ask what car service we use. But she doesn't pick up, so in the meantime we call a third number - and I tell Rachel that I wouldn't take Apple at this point no matter what. Screw that.
They say they'll be there in ten minutes, they make it in five. Right in time for Apple to show up, but at this point I can't even dredge up the energy to be mad, so I just tell the man that he's lost his fare. And what really does piss me off is that he had no reaction to this - ugh.
And we're home in 15 minutes, because the drive from Snug Harbor (or nearby) to Jenn's is very short, even though taking two busses takes forever :)
Which means we're home at 6:30. Six. Fucking. Thirty.
I could scream.

Date: 2006-09-23 04:56 pm (UTC)He has a crappy job, but can't easily get a different job or a job with a different service. Apple was hiring, and he needed a job. Apple might be horribly mismanaged, and thus it makes impossible commitments. He does his best to do his job well, while his superiors constantly mess that up. He knows he's going to lose a lot of fares do to their errors, but there is nothing he can do about it, and badmouthing the company could be bad for his job and wouldn't get him any benefit. So, he accepts when he loses fares, which happens so often he's pretty used to it, and just tries to get what he can out of his crap job.
