Paranoia all over the place then!
I remember especially their "Minipax", and finding that bit of disbelief a mite too big to suspend. Nobody, I said, would really name their evil government agency after the evil government agency in a highly influential book - would they?
Well. Around the same time I read 1984, I also read Handmaid's Tale. (I was big into dystopian fiction that year. It was high school. What do you expect?) The bombing of the government that allowed the crazy fundie whackjobs to take over was blamed, at the time, on Islamofascists.
I can honestly say that I never heard that word outside that book until very recently. Maybe I just don't get out much, I don't know.
But sometimes I think, now is the time for all sensible people to really think about living out of the country.
