Apparently, compulsive hoarding is hereditary. My mom compulsively buys and hoards yarns, her brother has boxes and boxes of Merlot and Chardonnay, their mom rather compulsively *doesn't* hoard things and kept an obsessively neat house for years....

This makes me feel rather better about my own collecting issues. Genetics, I can work with. *eyes room distastefully* Genetics are, to an extent, overcomeable, if you recognize them as such.

(Oh, and on the other side, my father compulsively collected non-garbage items people had left outside as trash, and his mom was... well... best not discussed, I think.)

Excessive hoarding, a flavor of obsessive compulsive disorders. It can be mild, but it often grows in severity if not dealt with and can be potentially fatal. People have filled their houses so much that they have been crushed/smothered under their own stuff. Plus, it can be a fire hazard or even a biohazard, depending on what is hoarded. At its worst, it can be incredibly scary. And generally, it makes the person miserable.

But like all such disorders, it is not destiny and it can be helped. Also like most such disorders, everyone has a little bit of the tendency. It only becomes a problem when it gets out of hand.

If you search the web on the topic, you can find lots of really scary pictures of homes totally overrun with stuff.
