I've loved the bronx zoo for ages. my grandparents used to take me there and we had a couple of class trips there. i'm dying to take my cousins or someone there, just to have an excuse to go.
I did know that. Whenever I visit NYC, I try to slot out a Wednesday trip to the Bronx Zoo. I haven't been up there for the past couple of years, though.
It's pretty hard to see everything in one day. I usually just focus on my personal favorites: the Asian rainforest (I think it's called Jungleworld), the Ethiopian plains (with the geladas and hyraxes), the gorilla forest, the rhinos and elephants, and the butterfly exhibit during the summer. And I stop to look at whatever I wander past on my way between those highlights.
Have you taken Ana up there yet? The children's zoo/play area is pretty good, and I heard they have an insect carousel now. And camel rides, IIRC.
But a long trip isn't necessarily a bad thing when you can use it for Ana time, right? One thing I like about riding the subway on these excursion is that you can sit and talk to the kids and play with them and not really worry about where you're going until you get to your station. Besides, the train ride itself is something of an adventure, at least for the kids I know. (Maybe the subway is old hat to Ana by now.) Well, the way out, anyway; they're usually tired and grumpy for the trip back. But then they sleep, and that's okay too.
So while it's a long ride, it's a pretty easy one from the Staton Island Ferry. Take the 5 train from Bowling Green to W Farms Square/E Tremont. The zoo is an easy walk, about four blocks straight north of the 2/5 Tremont Station.
And yeah, definitely old hat to Ana. We take the train at least twice a week most weeks (and it's two times each way), not counting her trips with her parents every other week or so to go see her grandparents.
I keep taking pictures of her holding the subway pole, and they keep not coming out. Boo.
