Interesting article, stolen from linguaphiles. I'm so torn about it. On the one hand, I do completely understand why they wanted a deaf child, and I can support that, but on the other, it still hits me as a little bit on the wrong side of things. *sighs*

Of course, I've never been a big fan of artificial conception to begin with. I don't think it's wrong, not at all, but I do think it'd be better if people planned on adopting instead. And then there'd be no controversy, because you can adopt for whatever traits you like, just about.

Yes, there is a Deaf Sub-Culture, carved out the larger mainstream culture for self-identification and in perceived self-defense, just as there are the Queer Sub-Culture, the Fannish Sub-Culture, and so forth.

But to deliberately conceive a child with a birth defect? Monstrous. Despicable. Evil.

I barely have words for the amount of disgust this article stirs up in me.
