Today is cloudy, cool, breezy, and wet.  It rained again this morning.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 4/4/26 -- I've seen a fox squirrel at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 4/4/26 -- I raked a section of the east path, so that I can sow grass seed later.

EDIT 4/4/26 -- I started sowing grass and clover seed along the east path.

EDIT 4/4/26 -- I finished sowing grass and clover seed along the east path.  But the new grass seed is bad, so covered in chemicals that it's blue.  >_<  Local selection is poor, but we'll have to try to find something different when this runs out.

EDIT 4/4/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 4/4/26 -- I checked the new picnic table garden.  Peas, carrots, bok choy, and lettuce are sprouting.  I replaced a few peas that didn't show up.

I am done for the night.

Name: Orbble
Pronouns: He/They
Age Group: I'm in my early 30s. Only looking to add folks 18 or older!
Country: USA
Subscription/Access Policy: Basically all access-only! Looking for folks who enjoy chatting, about shared fandoms, writing/fic in general, or just... life!

What I post about: General life updates, games I'm playing, and my fandoms. I like getting analytical about characters and want to post more of that. Occasionally I'll wax philosophical about life and the world through a fandon lens, which I also really enjoy doing.
I'm looking to connect with people who: Want to talk and share their enthusiasm, too! I'm a chatterbox who really wants to extend his fannish social circle - my work leaves me with a good amount of free time and I'd love to spend more of it engaging in fun talk!

I'm also looking to connect with people who are open-minded and accepting, and not interested in anti culture or the idea that censorship is a good thing. Absolutely not looking to connect with Trump supporters or other political extremists, nor TERFs or other transphobes. I will also note, I do best with people who aren't uncomfortable looking at the problems connected to their fandom and its creators/companies (I like multiple Disney properties and the Hellaverse, so... yeah...) but who are also understanding of the idea that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and that what one likes does not equal who you are.

Main Fandoms: Pokemon (the games and the Horizons anime/early OG anime), Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, Disney Duckverse (DuckTales and its reboot, the comics, etc)
Other Fandoms: Delicious in Dungeon, In Stars and Time, Steven Universe, Megaman NT Warrior (manga), Dimension 20's Cloudward Ho! and Fantasy High, The Muppets, Sonic the Hedgehog (the movies and the games, though I've only played a few) Lilo & Stitch, Tangled (though my feelings on the tv series for each are... mixed at best lol), Fraggle Rock. Inside Out, Zootopia, Kung Fu Panda, the Spider-Verse movies, Fire Emblem (Awakening, 3 Houses, Fates, Engage)
Favorite Ships: Blitzo/Stolas, Blitzo/Fizz, Fizz/Ozzy, Millie/Moxxie (Helluva Boss), Husk/Angel, Niffty/Baxter (Hazbin Hotel), Chilchuck/Marcille (Delicious in Dungeon), Protoman/Megaman, Lan/Chaud (NT Warrior), Comfrey/Daisuke, Maxwell/Torse (Cloudward Ho!), Judy/Nick (Zootopia), Jumba/Pleakley (Lilo & Stitch), Meowth/Pikachu (Pokemon anime), Rapunzel/Eugene (Tangled)

What I create for Fandom: Fanfic and meta! And occasionally icons, but mostly the other two.
Other Hobbies: Video games, reading, bracelet weaving, TTRPGs, icon making, and I've started getting into drawing this year!

Name: I'm Nix/Nyx. (Either spelling is fine.) I also use "they/them" by default, but any pronouns are fine and good.

Age: 28.

I mostly post about: my personal life, which often means things that have happened recently or my mental or physical health. Sometimes I'll also post about hobbies and interests. I do want to post about my interests more, but sadly my health can take over my life quite a bit.

My hobbies and interests are: Music (particularly singing and learning bass right now), streaming (particularly VTubing), and playing video games are some of my main hobbies. I also try to read (mostly nonfiction) and want to get into writing again. I really like alt fashion and doing fun makeup, but sadly haven't been dressing up or touching makeup much lately. Oh, and I occasionally delve deep into researching psychology every now and then, so you might see something related to that. It's hard to name more specific interests right now, but I'm currently attempting to watch One Piece up to where I took a break from reading the manga, which is no small task. I've also been playing Arknights: Endfield, old MMORPGs, and Overwatch lately.

I'm looking to meet people who: have similar interests or also live with chronic illness, disability, mental health conditions, and/or are neurodivergent.

My posting schedule tends to be: very sporatic. I tend to use this site very sporatically in general.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: At the very least, I would only like to add people who lean politically left. No right-wingers or centrists, please. I don't have the brain power to name all of my stances right now, but a few of them people might have problems with are being pro Palestine (and anti genocide in general) and rights for marginalized people in general. We don't have to agree on everything politically if you're comfortable with that. (It really depends on the specific things and the cirumstances.) I guess my main dealbreaker is not being left-leaning. Oh, and I don't want to add anyone under 18. Generally I'd prefer to add people who are 20 and up.

Before adding me, you should know: I post a lot about my life and health, which understandably isn't for everyone. I'm also very shy and often have trouble getting back to DMs or comments. While I try my best to comment, I can't always think of something to say or might be low on energy, so if it's okay with you, I might comment "❤︎" (or something similar) on posts I've read.

Edit: One more thing. I prefer to mutually subscribe before giving full access to my journal!

That's it I think! Thanks for reading. ❤︎

Fandom: Star Wars

Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] blackkat
Theme: arranged marriage, novel-length, epic works, worldbuilding, psychic powers, never met in canon, marriage of convenience, cultural differences, AU, fork in the road.

Summary: A week after an attack that nearly killed him and his son, Jaster Mereel finds Mostross dead on a battlefield. His killer is a Jedi, grievously wounded, who Jaster takes into his care. By Mandalorian tradition, Jon Antilles owes him a life-debt, and Jaster is cunning enough not to let such a thing slip away.

It's meant to be an entirely political arrangement. It doesn't stay that way for long.

Reccer's Notes: Blackkat is a very prolific author who does an excellent job of taking medium-obscure Star Wars characters and doing really interesting things with them. Jaster Mereel is Jango Fett's adoptive father, and the Mandalore. (In canon, he was killed by Montross.) Jon Antilles is a Jedi who was abused by his Master growing up, but also learned some really obscure and difficult Force tricks from her, and spends his life wandering the galaxy alone as the Force wills. You don't have to know much more than that, as blackkat weaves a really interesting story about them, fleshing them both out deeply from what canon gives us.

Soooo, the 1st of the Dwarf Columbine plants I started from seed last yr has come into bloom. Not so dwarf but all deep Blue!!!! There are 2 others from those seeds that have buds and can't wait to see what they'll be.
Only the Yellow Wallflowers survived last Winter and are Blooming. Some of the Sweet William's I started last yr are showing pre-buds. Looks like only one Sanguisorba survived so I'm going to move it to a less Shady spot with less competition. I've been too busy with seedlings so I'm behind a number of chores in the garden. I'm lucky I was able to plant the Fig and the Mulberry last week though they arrived at an inconvenient time to plant by the Moon(my project this yr).
I can't believe that my Mint didn't overwinter. The Roman Chamomile is about half it was last yr too.
Cheers,
Pat

Friday

It's been an up and down weather week..warm one day, then two days of cloudy, cold and damp.

We have had quite a lineup of dusk visitors - a flock a 4 Wild Turkeys, 2 Canada Geese and 1 or 2 White tailed deer pretty much every night this week. I think they are all looking to mate or perhaps the females are all pregnant. The turkey flock has been 1 male displaying with 3 hens close by.

During the days our usual mix of Blue Jays, House Sparrows, Mourning Doves and lately Red bellied and Downy Woodpeckers.

The stud turkey :)

Our landlord has put up a new barrier/fence. I guess he is finally concerned about us driving down the hill into the pond. :)

I mostly post about: I try to keep it light, varied and enjoyable to other people; probably a focus on books, art and culture. I keep track of books I’m reading by posting excerpts. I treat the internet like I’m chatting with strangers in line at the grocery store / like I’m sending postcards to friends. (Things I don’t write about: people in my life, my job, my politics.)

My hobbies are: Writing, art and photography, STEM, history, vintage fashion, design, cooking, visiting museums/galleries, long walks in the countryside.

My fandoms are: I’ve sometimes written fic but for the most part I don’t really ‘do’ fandom. I like classic literature, British miniseries, old crime novels, genre fiction, war dramas, historical fiction, and (often obscure) character actors; I largely avoid YA and franchises.

I'm looking to meet people who: I like people who are kind, at ease with themselves, intellectually curious, and have mostly offline hobbies. I like to interact with mutuals regularly (I probably won’t comment on every entry and I don’t expect that everyone will comment on all of mine, but I like to maintain correspondence). We don’t need to know everything about each other. Also, I’m not truly a prude but to all intents and purposes please do treat me like one; I will do the same to everyone else.

My posting schedule tends to be: Variable, but approximately once a week.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Unsolicited advice, insufficient grass-touching, relentless negativity, too much fandom-posting (I just won’t have much to contribute!). I’d prefer not to add/be added by anyone under 18, even though my blog is very SFW.

Before adding me, you should know: Sometimes I’m very busy! And I’m Jewish.

Reading Log!

Apr. 2nd, 2026 06:12 pm
[personal profile] mintyorca posting in [community profile] booknook
Hi! This is my first post ^_^ here's what I've been reading lately and some of my thoughts!

Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas

This was my first horror romance book, and I thought it was really successful at the romance part. I thought that the establishment of the two main characters as childhood sweethearts that are separated and reunited later with a bit of friction kept things interesting. I liked the setting of the Mexican rancho and I felt like I could picture certain scenes in a very cinematic light. The characters were somewhat flat beyond the main couple but I did enjoy their banter and the way they worked together, I often enjoy stories where a couple breaks up and comes back together to find their old dynamic sparks up again. As for the horror, it was pretty sparse. I didn't think it was that violent or gory, which was a bit of a let down for me because I was hoping for something with a little more of that horror intensity. Overall, it was worth checking out for me if you're into romance but like some action with it.

Hot Girls with Balls by Benedict Nguyễn

I really liked the unconventional prose of this, it took a bit to get the hang of it but once I did it was really interesting and offbeat in this way I really responded to. The relationship between the two main characters was so loving, you really felt the sense of trans sisterhood in the face of all this scrutiny and danger. The aspect of them being sports celebrities/influencers felt very relevant and real to current events, I know for some people this book is "too gen Z" but to me it just reflected the reality and immediacy of the dangerous rhetoric of transphobia toward trans women in sports and public life etc. There was a lot of dark humor I connected with, though the social media feed segments were challenging to read in their vitriol I think that was the point of them. This one really surprised me.

Strange Pictures by Uketsu

This book was really creepy and unsettling in a way I had a great time with. The themes of motherhood, cruelty, inherited trauma and trying to find the truth no matter the consequences made for a really good mix for a murder mystery. I liked at the beginning how it reminded me of internet lore or creepypasta, and it was fun to try and piece the clues together. I'm not a big mystery reader typically but the way this almost had a horror feel to it really kept me compelled.

I've actually got books to report for Wednesday! The reading part of my brain has finally kicked back in!

The Republic of Love, by Carol Shields

Took me almost a week to read this. Not because it's difficult reading- it's actually well written- but I just couldn't care about any of the characters! It's all about various people's love lives, mainly focusing on a couple who have previously had fairly disastrous affairs/marriages.

Dead As a Doornail, by Charlaine Harris

One of the Sookie Stackhouse series; not sure where in the series this one sits, since I haven't read any of the others. It held my interest, and was a fast read- two days. A very complicated tale with about a million characters that gave me some problem trying to remember who they all were, and whether they were vampires or were people or just humans. And I did have a bit of a  problem with the way every single hetero male wanted her sexually- kind of reminded me of the Anita Blake books but NOT to the extreme those are taken. (note: I have no problem with sex in books. It's the fact that there is this one woman who every single man MUST have. Give it a rest.) Anyway, if the library has the rest of this series I'll read it at some point.

And, maybe a quarter through:

A Spy for the Redeemer: An Owen Archer Mystery, by Candace Robb

Set in 1370, Owen is coming back from Wales (where he was born) from a pilgrimage to some sacred sites, but gets side tracked by a murder mystery he's obliged to investigate. Meanwhile, his wife, an apothecary, is being accused of murder herself...
So far, so good. Good detail as to how things are done back then. Strong main characters- so far, I really like the Lucie a little better than Owen, but I suspect he'll get more interesting as the story evolves.

Today is cloudy, chilly, and wet. It's been raining on and off since last night.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

EDIT 4/1/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

Happy 9th anniversary of the comm, AU friends! I want to thank everyone who has participated these past nine years. This comm couldn’t run without you! Since I started this, we’ve had over 740 fics, fanarts, and podcasts submitted for our 74 challenges. Wow!!

In August, we’ll be changing formats just a bit. Instead of AU themes, we’re going to have AU prompts. So make sure you stay tuned for that!

Without further ado, I give you THE ANNIVERSARY BINGO CHALLENGE!

Here’s what you need to know:

• Bingo will run from April 1st through July 31st. You can request a card at any point during this four-month period.

• Each bingo card will be a randomized 3x3 or 5x5 grid drawn from the prompt list below. Please indicate which size you’d like when you sign up.

• You can veto up to three themes you absolutely don’t want or ask for a whole new card if you get one that’s totally unworkable.

• The wildcard square can be filled by any AU theme from the list below not already on your card.

• Fills can be fic, art, or podfic, or any mixture of all three. Original fic is always welcome. How you interpret a theme is entirely up to you.

• The minimum wordcount for all bingo fics (and fics that become podfics) will be 100 words. Maximum wordcount? Shoot for the stars, friends! LOL!

• All fills must be new works – nothing previously posted.

• You can get a bingo by horizontal or vertical lines, diagonals, or blackout.

• Each square can be an independent fill or, if you’re feeling ambitious, you can combine squares into one fic (though each theme should be given equal time and not just mentioned in passing).

• You can post your bingo fills anywhere you like but make sure to also post them here at the comm so you can be included in the masterlist! There is a What If? AU Bingo collection on AO3.

• Like all our challenges, there are no true deadlines. I’d love to see some bingos by the end of July, but if you need more time you have it!

Below the cut you’ll find the list of AU challenges that will be included in the random card generation. (The links will take you to the original challenge post for that theme in case you have any questions about it.) If there’s one you absolutely don’t want, just let me know in the comments below when you sign up. You can veto up to three.

(I did combine some themes and eliminate others this year. For example, there’s now just one Winter theme, and I cut Christmas out because that can be covered in either Winter or Holiday Mythology. This way you won’t have so much repetition on your cards.)

There won’t be any penalties if you sign up and don’t get a bingo. We just don’t roll that way over here. ::grins:: So there’s no pressure, friends! Just have fun with it! Let me know if you’d like a bingo card and I’ll get one out to you!

Also, check out [community profile] allbingo, where you can interact with other bingo-minded peeps and monitor your progress!

You’ve got four months till the first prompt post goes up (August) so have fun creating!

Please Note: If you post your work to AO3 please be sure to select the What If? AU Bingo collection. To be included in the masterlist, you must also post here.

There are no actual deadlines at this comm. You can write any theme at any time, and as long as you post it here, you’ll get added to the masterlist. Also, we support all fandoms (including original fic), all pairings, and all ships (gen, het, slash), and other forms of AU media including art, podfics, any ole thing!

Earth Month -- April 2026

Earth Month takes place during April every year. It’s a time to raise environmental awareness and create consciousness around the issues that affect mother nature during this time of crisis. Every April, leaders, and environmental activists from all over the world join hands to create sustainable development and offer climate solutions, to minimize our carbon footprint and prevent further harm to our planet’s natural resources. It’s increasingly important to observe this month as Earth starts to unravel the harmful effects of climate change which not only poses a threat to our existence but is irreversibly damaging all forms of life.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Reading Wrap-up 3/26

Again, managed four books this months. Throughout the month I've been working my way through "Lonesome Dove" (and I'm still not finished) and since this is such a chunk of a book it took up a lot of my time.

Twardoch, Szczepan: The King of Warsaw. Amazon Crossing. 2020.
On a technical and literary level this was excellent and very interesting. Twardoch does a lot with narration and POV here and I won't say more because it would be spoiler-y. But if you like this kind of stuff, think about picking up this book. Unfortunately, the plot wasn't my cuppa. It's set in Warsaw on the eve of WWII and follows Jakub, an enforcer to the city's mobster boss. And I'm sorry, but I don't like stories about the mafia. It just doesn't interest me thematically. I didn't mind so much that this novel is full of (gratuitious) violence and d***s being cut off. But the mafia angle was a hard no. (Also a lot about the friction between Poles and the Jewish population in Warsaw, as well as working class and socialist fights. This is taking place at a very interesting time in Poland. You can read this without knowing a lot about Poland, but you'll have an easier time if you have a basic idea of the time period. The German translation I read had a bit of historical context in the end - can't say anything about the English edition, though.)

Everett, Percival: Dr. No. Picador. 2023.
This wasn't an overly successful read either. This was my first book by Everett. His name was on my radar and I know everyone was in love with "James" and "The Trees", but "Dr. No" was the book that was available at my library. So that's the one I read. And well, I'm not sure that this is a story that needed to be published. It's a satire on every James Bond movie ever and in truth, "Austin Powers" is the safer bet if you want something like this. Because at least "Austin Powers" is funny. "Dr. No" had about one joke (Everett riffing on the titular "nothing") but he played that note for 300 pages. So while this was kind of funny and kind of interesting in the beginning, I couldn't wait for the last 100 pages to be over. And nothing I read here will stay in my mind (ha ha).

Forster, E. M.: Maurice. Penguin. 2005.
Amazing. This was breathtakingly beautiful from beginning to end. I read "A Room with a View" a few years ago and remember liking it fine. It was a good book but it was missing that one secret ingredient that elevates a novel to all-time favourite status. "Maurice", in contrast, has that ingredient and I already knew in chapter 1. And yes, this is the novel that was only published postumously because of its rather controversial nature. And I can understand this. I don't know how much of this is biographical in the strictest sense, but it's evident from the get-go that this is a very personal, even intimate novel. Forster really goes deep here without ever being navel-gazey - something autofiction nowadays never manages. He doesn't only look at his own (or, as the case may be, Maurice's) homosexuality but at British society as a whole. He makes some very scathing remarks towards society and England's class system. In short, I loved this book and have since then put everything else he's written on my TBR.

von Arnim, Elizabeth: The Enchanted April. Vintage Classics. 2015.
This started out so good. It's about extremely bored English wives who decide to get away from it all by renting an Italian villa. It read a bit like "Fried Green Tomatoes" in the beginning, like a story that wants to show how incredibly boring and useless and repetitive being a wife can feel when you don't have any agency.  I expected it to turn into a story about female empowerment in which these women free themselves from their lives and husbands and do something totally different and fun. But then, once they're in the villa, and when the reader expects them to come to some sort epiphany in regards to their lives, von Arnim turns this around and it develops into chick lit. Suddenly, men are everywhere and the women realise that life is really boring without men. And then the book ends. I must say this left me totally non-plussed and I felt kind of cheated out of a good book. The authors language is beautiful - a bit flowery, but I found her prose engaging. But she stabbed her own plot in the back, IMO.
