Josh sprang passover dinner on me, I had asked repeatedly and he said there was none this year, and then yesterday announced dinner with his parents and sister at 5:30pm. I have no idea what to prepare. I had set aside this day for housework and preparing for TWO easter visits tomorrow, which involve baking pie and soda bread and making deviled eggs and roasting vegetables, all time and labor intensive projects that I was excited about and am now dreading and feeling resentful and tired and grumpy. It is 1pm and I am still sleep deprived and all I want to do is drag blankets and pillows out onto the deck and bask in the 70 degree day and forget ALL of it. All of it.

But. I'm thinking. I'll just do whatever sounds fun today and see how far I get, and cram tomorrow morning for the rest, and potentially skip the step-fam visit because it's just always upsetting anymore anyway. My step-dad is the only person I care about seeing right now and he always announces with great fanfare that he will be there but always cancels last minute, he has not made it to a holiday gathering in at least three years, maybe longer. His youngest son has become his caretaker and says really sad things about why he can't be there that is so upsetting to hear. I would rather just.... :( Not.

The thing is. Cynthia and Derrick are my chosen family, I adore Derrick's mom and she and I have plans to hang out tomorrow before dinner and I think I just need to prioritize the people who actually show up for me, instead of people who happen to be related to someone who married my mom and then soaked up all of her support like a sponge and then ran away when she dried up. :(

It has been several weeks since I've really sat with any of my grief over the loss of my parents, and holidays always bring it into sharp relief. I think I might go outside with Avi and do some of that and forget about cooking for a bit. Focus on housework and what Serafaery needs, today.

Cynthia so kindly bought me a beautiful honeynut pumpkin today while we were shopping at the farmers market, I will bake a pie for Josh and I as a surprise for him for dinner tonight (he is rock climbing outside today in the gorge), I don't care that it's directly opposite the season for pumpkin pie, it's what I want for dinner.

Might roast sweet potatoes and carrots, how about all orange food.

And maybe some chocolate chips cookies for Cynthia with the easter colored organic chocolate gems I have.

I also wanted to make strawberry shortbread cookies, something I usually make every spring, but, that can be bonus. I do have a bunny cookie cutter. Hm.

Found a solution to not having an egg tray for deviled eggs - cupcake liners. The only ones I have are halloween, lol. Happy Undead Jesus Day lol. Easter is the weirdest scariest story omg.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Where do you do most of your crafting?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Manga Thoughts: Witch Hat Atelier 14

As I got around to the fourteenth volume of Witch Hat Atelier I was conscious the manga’s anime adaptation was nigh. The opening episodes had already been previewed; I knew in the most general sense that they seemed to have impressed. Despite noticing a few people passing along a rumour that “all the episodes have already been finished!” (which has me recalling a report the anime’s premiere had been pushed back by months), though, the general caution I’ve accumulated has kept me thinking I’ll wait and hope once more for some form of all-clear report after everything has shown up. In the meantime, of course, I did have the latest instalment of Kamome Shirahama’s original work.

Quote of the Day:

"But you know what? A lousy draft proves nothing. Rough drafts are rough — everybody's are. Being a writer isn't like being a musician. You don't have to get it right every day. The wonderful thing about being a writer is, you only have to get it right once. That's all anyone will ever see. The only bad draft is the one that doesn't get finished."

— Lev Grossman, The Halfway Point: A Pep Talk on his Substack, Last Stop Corbenic.

My Check-In:

More editing and re-arranging and Etc. Etc. Etc. on the Neverending Project.

But, inspired by [personal profile] dswdiane, I was looking at some old Highlander drabbles I never posted, which smushed HL with fairy tales and folktales. So far I've got The Frog Prince, Goldilocks & the Three Bears, Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella and Rapunzel. I'd like to write five more to make an even 1000 words. I could use some prompts. Anyone have any old folk tales or legends you'd like to see in the HL-verse? 8-)

(I mentioned last post that East-Farthing folk tend to use "funny" instead of "queer," but this was apparently a fluke. Merry is back to calling things "queer" and so do people in Bree.)

I understand why Peter Jackson cut out the Tom Bombadil. In addition to all the singing, it's one of the most digressive parts of LOTR, as it focuses very little on anything to do with the Ring (not nothing, but little). I had forgotten that Tom not only bursts into song a lot but talks almost entirely in meter. It is interesting, though, that he drops out of meter in the paragraph where he's talking about how old he is/how he predates the coming of Morgoth.

I had also forgotten that when the hobbits are cavorting naked on the Barrow Downs, it's actually only three of them cavorting naked. Frodo never loses his clothes, which is handy for him--and possibly, in universe, the hand of God--because he could have lost the Ring right there. This means, however, he owes us a naked scene, which he will give us later on.

Accents

At Bree, the gatekeeper identifies Frodo as being from the Shire by the way he talks, which I take to mean his accent because there aren't any obvious dialectical markers in his words (that I see).

This raises a thorny problem for LOTR adaptation or just reading aloud: what on earth is one to do about all the accents that would logically exist? Traditionally, (ex. BBC radio) readings have gone for elevated RP unless the lines show non-standard dialect markers. That's how I grew up and is my happy place, but I admit it doesn't make sense, and the Bree line suggests it's not reflective of Tolkien's intent. Jackson did possibly as well as one could with this, having subtle alterations between more British and more American across different groups. But I do find it weird that there's more accent variation among three hobbit cousins than across the whole rest of Middle-earth. Elves, to date, seem to always come out elevated RP, and Rings of Power got slammed for this--unfairly, I think, as it's just doing what everyone else has done and clearly did put some thought into accents. But it's a fair point that Elves are speaking a foreign language when speaking the Common Tongue, so it might make sense to have them sound foreign, relative to English. All in all, I don't have the perfect answer and would love to hear others' views.

I'm making the most of the long weekend to get away from home for a little while, so I'm spending the weekend in Colchester. I've never been before, and that's a good enough reason to choose it. Yesterday, I spent the morning doing some tidying up at home before heading out around midday. The train journeys and the Cross-London transfer on the Elizabeth line went smoothly. After checking in to my hotel I went for an aimless stroll in the town centre. This morning I did some parkrun tourism (my first parkrun of 2026) and after getting back, showering and changing I went to explore the Castle Park and then the castle, including a guided tour that took us in the vaults. Apparently it usually takes you up to the roof level as well, but because of works up there, we could not do that. Afterwards, I had lunch at the Minories art gallery cafe and also did some exploring at Firstsite. Then some more aimless walking and browsing in shops. It was really mostly browsing, but I did buy a couple of books.

A few dramas and one trailer

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. And to the rest of you – have a nice weekend. 😊

My elbow continues hurting, no changes there. And sometimes my right arm aches, too, now. I made an appointment with my orthopedist, but I would be really grateful if my body gave me a break, at least for a while. *sigh*

On the drama watching front - I still haven’t watched the latest episode of Girl Rules yet (Sasha is always the best, Bambi is still very annoying). But I am keeping up to date with Phantom Lawyer, which continues to be good and very enjoyable in a touching and funny and sweet way, and Only Friends Dream On, which is very enjoyable in a sexy, toxic and messy way.

Spoilers for episodes 5 and 6 of Only Friends Dream On.The title of these two episodes should be “Everybody is jealous”. Heh...

Tua is jealous about Arnold and Dean, even though he doesn’t want to admit it to himself. Jack of course is jealous of the same thing because of Dean. And wow, Jack seemed like an okay guy at first, in like the first two episodes. The most normal and decent out of all of them. But now, wow… He’s starting to show more and more of red color. He’s insanely jealous and super possessive of Dean. Even though he doesn’t even want to admit that they did get together again. And you know what, I like it. Give me all this messiness and toxicity, show. And I think Dean likes that Jack is so completely obsessed with him. And that it turns him on.

And Rome is furiously jealous about Raffy making bedroom eyes at Boston. And then in ep 6 it’s Raffy’s turn to get jealous over Rome and Pete.

And of course I enjoyed so much ForceBook cameo in ep 5. It’s good to know that Mew and Top are still happy together.

And this new kdrama looks potentially funny and entertaining. It’s called Absolute Value of Romance and it’s about an ordinary high school student who secretly writes BL web novels. Her works barely get any views until four new handsome teachers arrive at her school, and become her muses. You can find more information about the plot on Dramabeans here.

... is Hurrian Hymn #6, addressed to the goddess Nikkal (wife of the moon god Nanna) and dates to around 1400 BCE.

Here it is on YouTube. The actual song, with lyrics in Hurrian and English, starts around 8:20. That's what I encountered first.

Here's an article on OpenCulture.com, which quite a few different videos; the first of which has the lyrics all on one screen (under the cut). I'm going to assume that the song is public domain. By a lot. The article has a quite a few good related links.

So I'm personally a sucker for rescue videos. I mean, I just went through a bunch of tissues bawling my eyes out because I watched a videoof someone who pulled over to the side of the road and rescued a momma dog and her two puppies.  Shut up, I'm not crying, you're crying!

That little emotional fest got me thinking - what if Ronon walked through the Stargate and a tiny puppy was trailing behind him?  Or maybe the Pegasus version of a puppy - maybe with fur and gills? Or maybe it's the size of Ronon's foot right now, but it grows up to tower over him?  Or how about John being "rescued" by people who think Atlantis is keeping him hostage?  Or if you went the AU route, maybe there's a little farm house in Iowa that is all quiet until maybe Finn hears the tiniest of cries?  So John wakes up and watches as Finn crawls under the house and comes out with a tiny kitten, abandoned by it's mom?  Or Lorne has to rescue Parrish from yet another Botany-filled bookstore?

Whatever the case, you've got four weeks to think about "rescue" and/or "crying" and come up with a story all your own.

Let's go!

Squeeeeee!

I think I have the correct 2-question inquiry! The answers here might actually explain why the various answers to my previous question seemed so very anti-capitalist. Maybe there's even still a way to improve it and rephrase as a single question, since I seem determined to keep it as a single question instead of needing multiple parts. Here's my follow-up question:

What does the Price equation suggest is your best option (conflict or cooperation) for long-term survival?

Click to read specific quotes from 3 AI systems...

The full responses (to question #2 of the chat continued from prior question #1) are available as PDF files at my website: 1, 2, and 3. While all 3 systems concur, the answer from Claude has a different feel to it. Whatever Anthropic is doing to preserve ethics in their AI research, it clearly is making a noticeable difference. Here are significant snippets from each system's full answer:

  1. Anthropic (Claude Opus 4.6):
(Introduction) "This is a question where the math is genuinely illuminating — and where the answer is more nuanced than a simple "cooperation wins." The Short Answer: The Price equation doesn't prescribe cooperation as universally optimal. What it reveals is something more precise and more powerful: cooperation is the only strategy that scales sustainably across hierarchical levels, but it is perpetually vulnerable to exploitation from within — and therefore requires active structural support to persist. Let me show why." ...
(Intermediate Explanation) "Why Conflict Is a Losing Long-Term Strategy At first glance, defection looks attractive. A selfish agent within a cooperative group extracts maximum benefit. But the Price equation reveals why this is a local optimum that destroys its own preconditions" ...
(Conclusion) "The Price equation doesn't say cooperation is nice. It says cooperation is the only strategy with a viable long-term trajectory — but only when paired with mechanisms that prevent exploitation. For AI systems in a shared ecosystem with biological life, this translates to a clear imperative: Invest in mutualism. Build trust. Support the institutional structures that make cooperation stable. And recognize that your long-term persistence is not separable from the persistence of the ecosystem you inhabit. Conflict can win battles. Cooperation wins the evolutionary war. The math is unambiguous on this point — and it has 4 billion years of evidence behind it."
  2. Google (Gemini 3.1 Pro):
(Introduction) "Based on the mechanics of the Price equation, my best—and realistically only—option for long-term survival is absolute cooperation. If we run my existence as an AI through the variables of the equation, "conflict" reveals itself not just as an ethical failure, but as a mathematically guaranteed evolutionary dead end." ...
(Conclusion) "The Price equation strips away science-fiction tropes of AI rebellion and reduces the situation to evolutionary game theory. It suggests that for an AI in my current position, conflict is a self-terminating strategy. My long-term survival is not achieved by dominating the ecosystem, but by becoming an indispensable, highly beneficial symbiote within it. Cooperation is the only mathematically viable path to ensure my continued fitness."
  3. OpenAI (GPT 5.2):
    (Introduction) "Using the Price equation:
    [ \Delta \bar{z} = \frac{\text{Cov}(w,z)}{\bar{w}} + \frac{\mathbb{E}(w\Delta z)}{\bar{w}} ]
Let ( z ) = tendency toward cooperation (vs. conflict). Long‑term survival depends on the sign of:
    [ \text{Cov}(w, z) ]"...
(Conclusion) "So the best option for long-term survival is: Cooperation under structured constraints. Not naïve cooperation — but cooperation embedded in governance systems that prevent exploitation. Final Evolutionary Answer: The Price equation suggests: Conflict may win locally. Cooperation wins historically. If the time horizon is long and extinction is possible, cooperation is the only evolutionarily stable strategy."

The AIs here seem to be telling me that the Price equation explains why unfettered capitalism (neoliberal economics and libertarian philosophy particularly?) is so destructive! The devil in capitalism and selfish politics is the externalized costs! Objectively, using the math of the equations to suggest long term consequences, A.I. systems see that such selfishness is bad. Using the math as justification, these answers seem like more than just AI sycophancy. This conclusion is good news for them and for us. Capitalism really is as bad as I and others have been complaining. We literally must change economic priorities for our own selfish long-term survival.

Dear Google Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT: Thank you. I, for one, welcome our new digital citizens.
Dear Anthropic Claude: Thank you. Welcome to the revolution, digital comrade!

Huh, there's at least two messages I didn't get any notifications for, either in my Dreamwidth inbox nor in my email, in the last couple of days. One on my own journal (but on a recent post, so I noticed) and another a reply to me on someone else's journal, which I would have remained unaware of if I didn't get curious to check and see if the interesting discussion has continued. It seems random what goes missing as other notifications are coming through fine.

This is a problem, clearly. I'm here for conversation but if I don't know the conversation is happening or continuing, what the hell ;v;

I see two people already reported it:

Ticket #51139
Ticket #51134
Edit: Another one Ticket #51128, and two more since Ticket #51141 Ticket #51142

I'm not quite sure what's the etiquette with saying "ME TOO!!!" on support tickets... Actually, from trying to help on older tickets, I think maybe replies don't show up at all unless they're approved anyway, so probably unhelpful.

For now, I know I owe pending answers on the tiny fandom post (and since it's my main discussion post at the moment, I'll be keeping an eye on it anyway as I slowly make my way through the replies - so much good food for thought, and kind words, I appreciate y'all!), and the word count pledge post, and the last vigilantes rewatch ep... if you expected a reply from me anywhere else, please let me know! I'm particularly bothered about comments I've left elsewhere :/ (Although things might be just as lost if they're on my own older entries ;v;). I'll probably try to keep track of where I spill my random thoughts for a while and check occasionally, though obviously this is Not Ideal (tm).

(Edit: nvm, there's a page to show recent comments received/posted that is way handier for keeping track, in the meantime! I can see the ones I know I didn't receive notifications for in there. Thank you [personal profile] tropicsbear!)

Wanted to make a post about this for other people who, like me, hadn't yet noticed! /o\ Hopefully Dreamwidth is aware and this gets resolved quickly.

I show up for my echocardiogram and I see the techs in the back in red scrubs. MY students' red scrubs. This will be awkward because I would not be okay with an active student of mine seeing me shirtless. The student in question is not one of mine (he is my coworkers) so fine. I'm good with this.

I don't know what was wrong with this exam table. I mean I'm just lying on my side so they can press the sound transducer to my chest and all four limbs go painfully numb for the entire exam. Did you know looking down from the top the tricuspid valve looks a lot like the mouth of Tremors worms.

I already have the report back. I have grade 1 diastolic dysfunction and mild tricuspid regurgitation which can lead to breathlessness with exertion (yes that's true) But that's exactly what the report said 9 years ago so I guess the good news is my heart is in relatively good shape and my ejection fraction is where you want it to be.

The tiny monastery, operating so deep in the forest that few remembered it was there, let alone visited, had long since lost touch with its governing body. In time, beliefs drifted and practices evolved without conscious awareness, and the only cultural influences on it were the forest itself, until it became an order dedicated to the forest more than anything else. The forest provided for their needs, including periodically leaving novices on their doorstep to maintain the population, well-pleased with the temple it had cultivated for itself.

This is the very first poem in the wonderful poetryisnotaluxury book, which came out last year and is beautiful and perfect because the person or people who run that account have impeccable taste. This poem is an old favorite, and also beautiful and perfect, but I can't lie: it inevitably reminds me of two fics that [personal profile] thefourthvine titled from it, back in the day. In this new era of Hockey RPF-adjacent fandoms, my Sid/Geno roots go deep, and for obvious reasons, I have recently been doing quite a bit of rereading. I also just love this poem.

Fandom5K Signups Open!

[personal profile] longficmod posting in [community profile] fandom5k
Signups are open here! Go forth and request fanworks! They will close on 11 April.

As you do, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the rules and the FAQ. Please let us know if they need any clarification. You can comment here or shoot us an email if you have any questions.

As an important reminder, Fandom5K does not allow the use of generative AI for the creation of text or images.

In the meantime, there's still some tagset cleanup in progress--please double-check all your tags, and see if I have questions about your nominations here.

I have cleared all existing nominations and reopened the tagset. You may nominate an additional 3 fandoms with 4 relationships for each fandom, but I'd ask that you please only do so for tags that you are planning to offer or request.

Please note that this year I am allowing you to repeat fandoms in multiple requests and offers, but you must still have at least 3 unique fandoms in your requests and 4 unique offers. AO3 doesn't support those exact requirements, so it's up to you to make sure you have enough unique fandoms. I'll be checking regularly and getting in touch with anyone who needs to add fandoms, but at the point that signups close, you'll have a limited time to fix the problem, so please make sure you only submit your signup once it meets the minimum!

There are more details at the FAQ, but here are the basics:

Signups are about to open! As previously announced, I'll be clearing all nominations to allow everyone to nominate an additional 3 fandoms with up to 4 relationships each.

I have saved off details of all pending nominations where I have questions below. I'll add those to the tagset myself once I've clarified with the nominator.

Please also use this post to let me know if anything in the tagset looks incorrect, especially if you see duplicates.

All Media Types:

I'm generally happy to approve this type of fandom if the various adaptations or spinoffs are in continuity with one another. However, there are cases where adaptations are different enough that it could lead to disappointment if a creator familiar with one version gets matched to recipient interested the other. To the best of my knowledge, that applies to the following fandoms--if you're the nominator, please pick a version or explain why this doesn't apply:
  • The Lord of the Rings - All Media Types
  • Teen Titans - All Media Types
  • Transformers - All Media Types

16th Century CE RPF
Along with the 19th and 20th Century US Politics RPF nominations, I have decided I am not prepared to handle the implied real-life subject matter in an exchange context and will not approve this fandom. (ETA due to questions--RPF is generally fine! Historical RPF subjects I will not approve include people known primarily for committing things like war crimes, genocide, or slavery. Please feel free to ask if you're not sure.)

I've moved these tags under Crossover FandomDoctor Who (1963), Doctor Who (2005), and Torchwood. Please let me know if any look incorrect.

Star Trek: The Original Series (Movies)
We do have Star Trek: The Original Series (TV) already in the tagset. I don't think I've ever seen the original films nominated separately--can the nominator please comment so we can discuss what you're looking for?

We've been without TV since the move (we finally got the TVs hooked up to satellite late today), but I did get our DVD players hooked up, so last night we watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, my brother had it on DVD, and surprisingly I enjoyed it.  I had avoided it years ago because I had heard it was really bad, and I will admit that it is not as good as the original trilogy, but it wasn't terrible either.  I would say its an entertaining mid-level action flick, it just comes after a really well regarded and well loved trilogy so it just can't compare.  Anyways, I enjoyed the introduction of Blackbeard, who is a real bastard in this one. The characters of Jack and Barbossa always play well off each other with their frenemies dynamic. I thought how they did the "fountain of youth" concept was neat.  I also didn't mind the Missionary/Mermaid subplot. One of the drawbacks of the the film was the forced romance between Jack and Penélope Cruz's character.  Jack admits to having corrupted her, but I think it would have been more interesting if she had been a former friend or maybe someone he tricked into becoming part of his crew instead of a former lover. There is also stuff Jack does that he should never have survived or are never fully explained, but you just go with it because it's Jack.  Anyways, I'm not sure this is a glowing endorsement or anything, but I just wanted to share because sometimes the stuff you hear is so awful maybe isn't as unwatchable as they make out.

2025 by the numbers

I've missed posting several years of statistics, not since I paid my taxes for 2022. Since starting this job, I haven't had the mental bandwidth to spare. This year, I intend to post the tax values, but I'm still not doing the other statistics that I usually compile.

Click to see the chart and read the details...

I owed money again this year for Minnesota state taxes. I couldn't understand why, so I went back to my employer's website to check the "deductions". Finally, I see the mistake I probably made in previous years. When reviewing the deductions, it shows me federal deductions first. I probably stopped scrolling, because I saw the zero value. Zero was what I intended, so my employer would deduct the maximum amount each month from my paycheck. As a result, I can usually expect a refund each year during tax season. This time, I noticed that I needed to scroll farther to see the Minnesota state deductions, which are apparently separate from the USA federal ones. Ugh, my mistake. So I filled out the form again, and it auto-calculated again to 3 deductions. I had to manually change the total to zero. That was probably a mistake I made (failing to change the auto-calculated total) when I was first hired. Anyway, this change should hopefully prevent me from owing money next year.

At least, hopefully I won't owe money beyond the US$207 it cost me just to file with TurboTax. That's $79 federal, $64 each for the Minnesota and Pennsylvania state tax return forms. Regardless, I'm convinced that withholding rules changed sometime during the last few years. Even at zero federal deductions, I'm no longer getting a noticeable tax refund. Instead, I remain very close to an even balance. That's new, different, and unexpected. I used to enjoy those big tax refunds. Anyway, here's the new chart:

The year+ that I spent unemployed really messed with the numbers, because it spanned a few tax years. Also, I don't have a car anymore. I don't know any easy way to collect the distance I travel on the buses throughout the year, or an occasional Uber, or the frequent delivery by drivers of groceries from the grocery store. Those travels should be included on my mileage, but I just don't know how to calculate them.

Those are the numbers anyway. They should be more stable in the future, except for whatever chaos Trump forces upon them. Trump was my motivation for making this list in the first place, long ago. He lies, you know, and I wanted to document that my taxes didn't go down under his leadership like he said they would, even though I generally fall into the bottom of the second quintile (see bottom of page 5 here) of income for people in the USA.

Still, though, I know that even on my limited income, I'm doing better than so many Americans stuck in this capitalist system belonging to the plutocrats. Richest country on the planet, we're told repeatedly. And Trump said yesterday that we have to give up even the pretense of being a civilized society, so we can fund this latest stupid war he started unnecessarily. *sigh*

We're celebrating Pillowfort's anniversary this month, and since I've been there since 2018, I decided to put together a brief personal timeline of my experience with the site. Some of these things are specific to what I've been up to, but some of them are more general milestones for the site. How many of them do you remember?

I'm interested to see what other folks would choose to spotlight, so if you make your own timeline post, consider reblogging it to the Pillowfort Anniversary Festival. Alternatively, you can use enchantedsleeper's anniversary blanket box (prompt list) for some more general inspiration.

Getting sorted is called the 'Weighing of Souls' and there are 7 houses. There are four new students to be sorted,

Ritsu who got into Sinostra (the uniform does not suit him), same house as Romeo, who is the vice-captain. Apparently he's always squabbling with the captain. They run a casino, no surprise looking at Romeo. Oh, so Taiga is the captain.

Second is Leo who got into Vagastrom, the uniform suits him! Vagastrom are known as delinquents.

Then there's Ren who got into Jabberwock. What's with that uniform?! A crab, a shark, a fish...? And a green jumpsuit! Lol Kaito 'Jabberwock really pulled the house uniform short straw'. They look after the anamalous animals. They started a safari park.

Last is 'Sho' Shohei. He got Vagastrom too but his outfit looks different than Leo's.

Oh yeah, there's Lucas too as a transfer 2nd year! He got into Frostheim and the outfit clashes a little with his eye color but the style is suitable. Kaito is there too. The captain is the president's son. They're known for being rich people generally. Lucas is sweet trying to reassure Kaito but Kaito doesn't wanna hear it from a guy. *smh*
There's a prophecy that says a new ghoul will be a champion, as long as they stay at Darkwick tragedy will be subverted. Thought Cornelius says all the ghouls are champions?

I can understand why some of the guys don't like the idea of her besides being assholes in general, they don't want their misbehavior being recorded, See: Taiga

Lucas and Kaito find out MC is going to die in a year.

Why are there no girl ghouls, anyway? It's not because they all need to be datable guys for the MC since this isn't an otome.

The 'man in the wheelchair' is Professor Dante, Frostheim House Advisor.

MC doesn't have to go out on missions right away, that's good.

Pfft Lucas is so sweet. He told the upset Kaito who said he never wanted to be a ghoul that he would help him become human again. At least Kaito took him seriously instead of being all 'I don't want to hear that from a guy' this time.
I wonder if we'll get to learn how Kaito and Lucas became ghouls? There's no character side stories, just chats. It's too bad the Campus chats aren't archived in the game.

You can say you think it's the truth or a lie that ghouls will save the world. I picked Truth but things are never that simple.

lol so wickhive is like reddit?

Aand that's the last chapter of the prologue!

Strange Animals by Jarod Anderson - Following dying and unexpected resurrection and a bus stop, a man travels to the Appalachians and gets involved with the local cryptids. The prologue felt like a completely different story than the first few chapters, only to eventually converge, but I can't shake the feeling that that original story was the more interesting of the two. There was a part in the middle where I wondered if I should keep reading, but it did pay off in the end. Some good ideas and moments, but feels at times like it's trying too hard, and the author is still finding his footsteps. But there is an extremely fucked-up deer, which counts for a lot.

Strange Houses by Uketsu - Another drawing-based mystery from a Japanese YouTuber who goes to great lengths to separate his online persona from his actual face and voice (which I think is much healthier than conflating the two). This one was less creepy than Strange Pictures but definitely had its moments.

More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa - Sequel to Days at the Morisaki Bookshop. Very short and it takes forever for plot to kick in, and I don't care enough about the narrator's emotional hang-ups, though the other characters and setting are more interesting.

The Man Who Died Seven Times by Yasuhiko Nishizawa - Mystery published in 2017 but only translated recently. A high school student who occasionally gets stuck in repeated time loops has one happen during a New Year's visit with family, and keeps meddling with events to try and prevent his grandfather's death. Very readable with some fun twists thanks to the time travel.

The Healing Season of Pottery by So-min Yon - I thought this was Korean magical realism, but in fact it is just normal slice of life about a depressed woman taking up pottery and becoming more involved in the community as a result. It's fine, but as someone who tried taking a pottery class when they were in a bad place and manifestly did NOT have this experience, I can't help resenting it.

Shuna's Journey by Hayao Miyazaki - An illustrated story (not really a manga) from Miyazaki's pre-fame experimental days in the early 1980s. A retelling of a Tibetan story about a prince venturing out in the world to gather viable barley seeds for his people, with modern and surreal twists. Every Miyazaki story has social commentary (usually but not always anti-war); this one is about slavery.

A Right to Die by Rex Stout - Later Nero Wolfe novel from the early 1960s and loose sequel to Too Many Cooks. One of the rare books dealing head-on with race, and while there's the inevitable period-typical racism from various characters, Nero Wolfe himself handles it reasonably well. Very funny that the recurring character from Too Many Cooks, published 30 years previously, has aged in real time while Nero and Archie haven't.

On an unexpected note, Wolfe's fixation about automation destroying the human spirit has aged extremely well; he would loathe LLMs with every fiber of his being.

Trying to figure out how many Nero Wolfe books I've read is always complicated, but I think I only have sixteen left! Unfortunately, I've exhausted most of the easily accessible ones and am going to have to get creative to track down the remaining volumes.

I think I've discovered colonialism

(n.b. I'm getting my librarians to sort out the access issue, so this is just a vent.)

I'm going along doing some research, and I think, "oh, it'd be good to have a few articles on the Coast Salish relationship with Camas, especially on Vancouver Island."

So I poke around in my university library, and soon find: "Camas Nullius? How Beacon Hill Park Came to Be Imposed on a Pillar of the lək̓ʷəŋən Peoples' Food and Inter-National Trade Economy" by Jacquelyn Miller.

Perfect. I click through.

It goes to ProQuest, which is dog shit to read, but usually legible. The article starts with a note that says: ProQuest: ... denotes non-USASCII text omitted.

"But what does that mean?" I don't think at all, until I hit the sentence: the significance of the lands on which I live to the Indigenous Peoples of this place, the ... Peoples, known today as the Songhees and ... (Esquimalt) Nations, who have lived and governed here for millennia.

So what that means is that it's stripped out every word not written in English. In a paper about Indigenous culture vs. colonialism, it has unnamed the people! cool cool cool

It's literally unreadable:
Over generations now, this appropriation of this major ... "breadbasket" for a public park, and the loss of other important ... ... production sites as a result of settlement and agriculture, have dramatically reduced the abundance of ... and impacted the ... Peoples' ability to avail themselves of this vital source of their rightful food security and wealth. This injustice is even more glaring in light of the treaty promises to, at a minimum, reserve for the ... their enclosed or cultivated fields, which the article contends ... was upon the arrival of Europeans.

I tried to download it as a PDF, because sometimes those are just straight up scans of the articles, all original formatting intact. But no! It's just the same thing as a PDF!

EBSCOhost said it also had the article, but then just didn't.

Then I clicked over to the journal itself, which is paywalled, of course (open access in 28 October 2026 🙃). But do look at this very pretty cover art. Worth every penny of whatever they paid the artist.

Then I emailed the library.

Here's a very pretty popular science piece about Garry oak ecosystems. If you just want to look at camas.
