Sheesh, there's that liberal media at work! As I said to... um... the person I stole it from, CBS' eye logo always looks Santa-y to me, and not in the good way. They see me when I'm sleeping....

ANYway, I'm just posting to ask a few questions....

We know now that war can happen on U.S. soil. Back in 1991, we could tell our children that despite what we saw on TV and how scary and real it looked, there had been no time in history when there had been an attack in the U.S. throughout any of the wars we fought in. But it's different this time. We can't say that to our children any more.

Um, wasn't DC invaded during the War of 1812? And I know there was the whole Battle of New Orleans, but I can't recall if Lousiana was part of the US then....

Either way, we've also got Polk and his famous statement that "American blood has been shed on American soil!" Polk was talking about disputed territory, but the point still stands.

Oh, and then there was that whole bombing of Pearl Harbor thing. Even though Hawaii at that time wasn't an American state, it was still US soil.

So were all those embassies that have been bombed in the past, come to think of it...

Oh, and the WTC, back in '93? I remember that!

And the Indian Wars, do those count? If they do, does the Civil War count? An entire frakkin' war fought on American soil.

I will decline to mention the Revolution. That would be unfair.

So, either we were completely ignorant back then, and now we're not, or we were lying to our kids back then, which means that now we can continue to lie to them, and therefore we are perfectly able to say that war can't ever come to American soil. Saying something, after all, doesn't make it true.

Maybe CBS has improved in the last four years... I guess.

In WWII the Japanese sent over incendiary balloons that were meant to cause forest fires in the west. There was at least one family of four that was burned to death.

I believe there were also some skirmishes with German U boats within the 12 mile coastal waterway border (part of the US - now the limit is 200 miles)

Yes. The british/Canadians invaded Washington DC in the war of 1812 and razed it.

Apparently it's still a sore spot for some Americans who claim that such a thing never happened.

Convenient how they get to overlook the whole burning of the White House part of the War of 1812.

I found a few similarities between Polk's speeches and some of Bush's too.

Saying something, after all, doesn't make it true.

That's their whole strategy, though. And actually, it's worked pretty well so far. You just repeat something over and over and over and over (like there's a connection between Saddam and al Qaeda) and it won't become true, but a lot of people will THINK it's true. :/
