My take on the article is that it makes a lot more sense to learn how to properly use your body than to spend money on devices that seem to try to compensate for being using their bodies wrong.
One of the most helpful things I was ever taught was a brief mention by a biology teacher. He mentioned how you can walk more efficiently if you use more of the energy from your hip for a longer stride rather than using the knees a lot. I learned how to do this (it's pretty easy if you just experiment with different ways of walking a little) and I've found that if my knees hurt, it can really help give them a bit of a break, and if I'm tired, it can help me to travel a distance I need to travel with a small energy savings. To me, small energy savings can be significant. It also means walking faster, but it isn't overly tiring.
