1. I'm seeing a lot of comments from people I don't know. Hi-hi! Who are you? Come introduce yourselves! Tell me how you found me!

1a. The rest of youse can do that too.

1b. You can lie about yourself if your real life isn't interesting enough. I won't mind.

2. I'm going to rewrite my userinfo soon. I think I'll model the form after [livejournal.com profile] book_icons, and stick it all in an entry somewhere. Much cleaner. Anybody have any questions they'd like answered?

3. How can something be the "very first"? Isn't that like being "very unique"?

4. We've been having blackouts. I don't get it. It's not even that hot yet!

5. Believe it or not, I'm actually going offline today for a substantial period of time. Going to the bookstore. The air-conditioned bookstore. Should be fun!

6. Okay. Since response was generally positive, who's up for a game of Calvinball this weekend? A real game, in Central Park (or another park, whatever)?

7. I need to buy some shorts.

If you're being utterly literally-minded, then yes.

In practice, there's a difference between "the first X" and "the very first X"; I'd say it's not a matter of semantics, though, but rather one of emphasis.

1.a. Hi I am Debi. You know me. Oh, and I found you through [livejournal.com profile] pottersues, I think.

3. It's just emphasis.

.... I can't help it, my life is really boring ._.

2. Not really =P

3. In the same way that something can be the very best. As opposed to just being the best, dontchaknow? :P

4. Blackouts happen whilst it's hot? Any reason why? =/

5. Enjoy yourself!

6. I would, but I'm a thousand miles away. Or more. Or less.

7. Get ridiculously huge pink ones with horrible flowers printed everywhere =D

What's the difference?

Emphasis, I'd say -- using "the very first" emphasises that this is the first X, and that this is notable.

For example, in "I fell in love with him the very first time I set eyes on him" emphasises the fact that this was the first time, since it would be unusual for a first time; "I fell in love with him the first time I set eyes on him" has less emphasis on "the first time" and uses it more as a neutral adverbial phrase, setting the time.

Perhaps a bit like the difference between "I don't get it" and "I don't ***ing get it", where the second is more emphasised and the first is more a neutral statement of fact.

I never once wondered about this until five minutes ago, when I saw somebody with the username "The very third".

That username wouldn't make sense to me, either, since I'd expect "very" to be with something extreme, such as a superlative form of an adjective -- and while "first" and "last" are extremes along a continuum, "third" is in the middle.

I suspect it's supposed to play with your head.

"4. We've been having blackouts. I don't get it. It's not even that hot yet!"

We get blackouts when the freak winds blow down powerlines or lightning strikes like the other week. It doesn't usually get hot enough here to bother that much about air-conditioning but damn I wish someone around here would invent central heating.

Hi! I'm Philip. You can probably imagine where I first ran across you.

I decided to add you mostly because of your comment in your userinfo that you "[are] mildly autistic", since I sometimes think I display some traits of that. I wanted to see what you are like and read what you write.

Hey, me too. But I work for LJ Support where the only evil we fight is grammar, blinkies, and bad color.

1. Don't know if I fall into this category (people you don't know) but I guess I do. I found you trough the asperger group, and thought you seemed interesting. I can't remember when I added you, but one day you where on my f-list :)

1.
I don't know if I've commented enough to count, but ... Hello! I'm an engineering student at the University of Maryland, relatively new to LJ, and reading your journal because it's interesting. You have a lot of really good links, along with many interesting comments on various things. I guess I might be somewhere in the autistic spectrum, but it's never been an issue for me or my family.

Not exactly sure how I found you – probably through [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes. I haven't actually friended you; I feel uncomfortable friending someone who doesn't know me, and whom I barely know, and I tend to read peoples' Livejournals through Firefox tabs in any case.

1. I was told that you'd have some good stuff to say by another livejournal friend of mind, because my son has Asperger's. As for who I am, you're welcome to read my journal and ask questions if you'd like :)

3. I took "very first" to mean "first of the first group", and "first" to mean "in the first group" but that's just me. "Very unique" to me translates to a bigger deviation from the norm than "unique".

4. Did the local schools get out recently? I don't know if there are now a million kids at home playing video or PC games, but if there are that could have something to do with the blackouts.

5. Happy looting at the bookstore!

7. Happy hunting for shorts, too :)

Found you? I didn't know you were lost! Oh okay...
Book Icons and metaquotes.

Me- middle aged bundle of insecurities watching my life change daily as my kids grow old and I finish college, go to work, quietly implode, hopefully doing it all with a sense of humor.

1. Sorry (*sheepish look*)....i'm a 20 yr-old female college student at Auburn University, AL, USA; as for a name...let's stick w/ irishtiger ;)
I am extermely ADHD & in the process of getting an AS diagnosis (finally!)
I'm a health administration major & soon hope to be a force of change in the "behavioral" world by stopping all this nosense about "curing" & poor treatments for those on the Autistic Spectrum (particularly (not exclusivly)

I don't think I "found" you but I came across your journal through the Aspie community. I browse the "friends" page when I'm bored & your entry on gym sorta struck a chord w/ me I guess. Just FYI, you're not on my friends page though (I don't add people w/o asking first).

3. I don't get the "very first" thing either....

5. bookstores are fun ;)...I'm going to Books-a-million tommorrow ^_^

that's all I have to offer

Oh, and I think of "the very first" as being opposed to "among the first," and "the first" by itself can include both. If that makes sense.

1. I don't know if you remember me or not. I'm Tasia from NeoColours and you gave me my first live journal- code. I'm probably a bi-polar but I had a time where a de-friended everyone in my list because I was getting all paranoied of them. Then I realised that I had nothing to read on my friends page so a re-friended you. And then eventually I started commented on your livejournal and um, yeah. That's everything important that happened to this point.
