If I download something, and it wants me to restart, and I choose to restart later, most programs shut up and let me go away.

Not Microsoft updates. No, according to Microsoft, I'm an idiot who will leave my computer on forever rather than restart. I need constant reminders to restart my computer so that I will be able to get the benefits of their stupid updates. LEAVE ME ALONE! I will restart the computer in my own time, not yours, you stupid program.

It's annoying as hell, and I'm so afraid about the service pack 2 that I simply refuse to bother with any updates. >

Actually, running a computer after an operating system level update can leave your system unstable. Because then you have old parts of the OS in memory, but new files, and if the OS needs to reload something from the HD, it can get confused.

OS updates are one of the few times when computers *should* be updated. Most other programs that say they need to be rebooted are either badly programmed, or the programmers are just lazy and say "eh, it's easier to just tell them to reboot than it is to actually test if it's needed".

SP 2 sucks monkey balls.. The advice I have is - if you're system is working just fine now with SP 1, for the love of all things don't break it!

Um, I mean "force us to restart". Sorry.

That's my attitude too. Unfortunately a friend downloaded it whilst using my computer (*stabstabstab*) so now it wants to be installed every time I boot up.

Norton used to piss me off with updates. 50% of the time you'd get "restart now, restart later" and the other 50% you wouldn't get any choice!

Monster says that HP is even worse. If you download HP updates, they will restart your computer whether you want them to or not.

I WILL leave my computer on for days on end via hibernation, when it cooperates and doesn't overheat and shut down. The same is true for my mom, although in her case, she's got the very good reason of some kind of glitch in the DSL program or somesuch wherin it takes forever to get functional again if it has to restart.

My virus program updates automatically and constantly without needing to be shut down, and on my own laptop, I just ignore the Windows updates until they give up and stop pestering me.

At least now there's built-in force quitting for Software Update without going to the Terminal...
