Abdul has a relative, an uncle or something, named Cupid. Every time I hear this, I remember the guy I knew at PS 188 named Eros.

So...

Which is worse? Cupid-rhymes-with-stupid or Eros-rhymes-with-gross? Or the classic Jeremy-sounds-like-germy?

At least Jeremy is a normal name, and can be shortened to Jerry. I think it beats both Cupid and Eros by a mile.

Don't even get me started on stupid names parents give their children. It's one of my pet peeves.

Stupid, stupid,
go and wait for Vizzini with Cupid.

I think the rhymes are both about the same, but Cupid is worse just for the association with Valentine's Day. I think you'd get a lot more people making fun of Cupid than of Eros.

I know. But most people don't connect Eros with Valentine's Day. Cupid is much more commonly used.

I think "stupid Cupid" rolls off the tongue better than "gross Eros," so that gets more bad points, I guess.

Again, I know. :) But in most people's minds, I think Cupid is worse.

Eros rhymes with gross. Cupid is a cool name.

Oh yes, 'creative' spellings of common names irk me as well.

*sigh*

Is it bad that I actually like both Cupid and Eros as names? Though this could stem from both my absolute love for exotic sounding names, and my absolute love my greek/roman mythology. That being said, I would nevre, ever, not in a million YEARS name my kid either Cupid or Eros, that's just... Evil on the part of the parents!

See, and my pet peeve is people who give even a second thought to the names parents give their children.

I was actually a post in childfree, because someone didn't like my middle child's name. Finbar. We're Irish, it's unheard of in our circles, and in a city of Schlomos, Borises, Shaniquas and other varied names, does it matter? I got teased as ANN MARIE.

Who names their kid Eros??? That's almost as bad as naming your kid Gaylord.

Eros would be a terribly embarrassing name to have as soon as people found out what 'erotic' meant. Cupid is just... bad, and would instill a lifelong hatred of Valentine's Day in its owner. Jeremy is a normal enough name, really, and with Jerry as a shortform, it's nowhere near as embarrassing as the other two.

Additionally, I'm scared of your icon.

I was going to reply to this, but [livejournal.com profile] conuly said everything I wanted to say anyway.

My daughter's middle name is Rain. Most everyone (adults and peers) seem to like it.

And let me tell you, I need to tell people how to spell Ann Marie, and get it right. And Hughes. No one can spell or pronounce that. If something as simple as that can't be done, then I don't feel the least bit concerned that a person with a different name has the same problems as someone with a simple name.

And Tomas is a proper spelling.

See, I have to tell people "No e, no hyphen, two words" all the time.

And then I have been called:

Ann Marie
Anna Marie
Ann Maria
Anna Maria
Rose Mary
Rose Marie
Rose Ann

And as far as the teasing, Anna Maria Alberghetti ALL THE TIME. Or just Anna Maria in a really thick cheesy Italian accent. Bleah. Although I didn't get teased for the Italian side of my family, I got called a Nazi because my family came from Germany. Even though they were HERE at the time. Nazi, baby killer, asked if the lampshades in my house were made of skin, etc. It was awful. :(

Kids can be cruel.

We're still tossing around names should we have another one. Andul feels positive we would have another girl. I did like his suggestion of Seraph, as it works with Ana's name, y'know? And I love Celeste, but that name has a very definitive "feel" for me now, so I don't know if that would be best. We'll find something nifty, unusual, but not TOO off the wall (I hope!) :-)
