If you're in a comm with no maintainer, and there's some serious spam in there, how do you organize a coup?

You can't. Only maintainers can create maintainers. I suggest you go to LJ Abuse about it and explain your problem.

Contact the abuse team. IIRC, they'll generally be able to help if the maintainer doesn't indicate that they still want the comm and if there are violations of the ToS going on int he comm.

[21:13] bridgetester: abe, spam-filled comms w/no active maintainer are abuse, right? (not on board)
[21:13] burr86: yes.

As the resident Comms admin + abusey person, I vote he knows. :)

That still counts as a negligent maintainer though. Good luck, and have fun gathering URLs.

i dont really think that lj-abuse will do anything. let me tell you a tale that is slightly humorous, yet also a little unnerving because it could happen anywhere:

christian_teens recently had a HUGE spam issue. a few people had joined up over the summer with fake journals set up to look like they were christians, and they were waiting for the mod to be, occupied or otherwise unavailable. they were also bragging about this in some communities that some of my friends are in, and i was told about this. the mod lately went on vacation for a week or two, and every day, they filled the community with porn porn porn porn porn, and i will admit, i thought it was funny to a degree, although they went WAY over the edge of taste and such. anyway, the people filed numerous lj-abuse reports and the cut and pasted the responses into the comm, and you could almost hear the lj-abuse person laughing at the absurdity of the situation, but they said there was nothing they could do.

so unfortunately, i do not know what else you can do. hope you ... ummm ... enjoyed the story.

The situation is slightly different though - an absent mod vs a holidaying mod.

Talk to lj_abuse. Spam's a TOS violation, ergo we can act on it. What we usually do is attempt to contact the maintainer, give zir a few days to get back to us, then if there's no response pick a comm member who doesn't look like a drama whore to take over the comm. And meanwhile if the account exists solely to spam, we'll probably nuke it.

[I wasn't involved in this case, so I can comment on it in general.]

Maintainers own their comms unless they seriously screw up and violate the TOS left, right, and center, or until they disappear and show no plans to come back (in which case we'll always email them just to make sure, because can you imagine the uproar if we went around stealing comms?). If a maintainer is just going on vacation, it's a good idea for zir to appoint a moderator for the duration, just in case something like that happens -- unfortunately, we can't force that choice, and we can't take someone's comm away just for not being there every day. If there's some severe TOS-violations occuring, like someone spamming with kiddie porn, we can find a work-around, but that's only in extreme circumstances because of the reasons I've been gnarbling on.
