Great literature, and even just decent literature, existed before HP and will continue to exist afterwards. Harry Potter, while certainly fun, is NOT great literature. When insulting a book, do not say that "you should just read harry potter again". When complimenting a book, do not say "if you like harry potter..." unless the book in question is the second, third, fourth, or fifth of that series. I never, EVER, want to see comments like the next one again:

I am baffled that reviewers compare A Series of Unfortunate Events with the ineffably sublime Harry Potter. I understand (and wholeheartedly agree with) comparisions of J.K. Rowling with Roald Dahl and even Shakespeare. (Do a theme analysis and just tell me what you see. There's a reason people keep reading that stuff.) JKR is a genius. Lemony Snicket, or the powers behind him, seem to have just decided one day to write a book.

Ineffably sublime? WTF? Harry Potter is NOT ineffably sublime. Do you even know what that means? Furthermore, don't compare Rowling to the Bard. Just... don't. Not unless you have some harsh criticisms to make (which is perfectly reasonable, of course, we're entitled to our opinions etc.) I won't argue that Lemony Snickett is better because he isn't, but that does NOT mean that J.K. Rowling ranks with Shakespeare.

One day at school, everyone began to talk about Lemony Snicket. Lemony Snicket this, Lemony Snicket that, Lemony Snicket is better than J.K Rowling and should be compared to Tolkien, etc

Now, this is okay. Although the comparison to Tolkein *might* be current over-fandom hype, at least they bothered to mention two DIFFERENT authors.

Try Dianne Duane, Patricia C Wrede, or Tamora Pierce. Or just re-read the harry potter books. They're just as enjoyable the 7th time around as the first, which is more than I can say for this one...

Another person who knows of other authors! Yay!

Anyway, don't bother it isn't Harry Potter (although at least they aren't 1000 pages long...)

Nothing is EXCEPT Harry Potter. Say "it isn't as good as Harry Potter" or "I didn't like it as much as I liked Harry Potter" or "it isn't really that good" instead. And, maybe, suggest another book to read!

Apparently, the rampant "Harry Potterism" is more evident in the current hype books... I'm having to look a bit to find them for Tamora Pierce, there isn't a reference in EVERY FRIGGIN' COMMENT. More references about the sex. *rolls her eyes* People? There wasn't all that much sex, okay? None in the first book, and three guys in the last three, one of whom she marries. Hm. Each book takes at least (often more) one year. So, three guys in MORE THAN three years. I'm hardly a sex-crazed fiend, but even I don't think that's excessive. And, honestly, I must've skimmed right by all that sex, because I didn't sit up in shock when I saw it. It can't be that graphic. Anyway. Moving on. Back to my main rant....

Okay. Nothing dramaticly rantable over there... though far too many comments about "if you like harry potter..." there's nobody going on about how it's ineffably sublime.

*goes to check Artemis Fowl*

To continue with the review, I will compare Artemis with Harry Potter - mainly HP's first book. This can and should be done because both books were released only few years apart, both are directed to pre-adolescent and teenager readers and both have similar protagonists.

Can't argue with that, though I really, really wish you'd kept the review self-contained.

Also, far too many comments about "how dare you compare this to harry potter" and "this is way better than harry potter" FIND SOME OTHER BOOK! Or, here's a novel idea (PUN! YAY!)... don't compare books, just let them stand on their own!

I bought this book on the basis of all the hype ("the next Harry Potter...")

*screams*

Artemis Fowl is the kind of book where you love it or hate it. there is no in-between. I am one of the people who love this worthwhile book thats like a magazine while waiting to see Doctor Potter.

This is aggravating....

To cheer up, I'll go see if anyone but fundies who don't like witches complained about the almighty Harry Potter.

Update

Actually, there were quite a few, and well written complaints too! My faith in humanity is restored. I'll save my actual harry potter (not harry hype) rant for another day.
