Remember I said that I was watching Battlestar Glactica?

Color me impressed. In most if not all scifi "space" shows I've seen, people think like they're still on a planet. Ships always meet nose to nose, right side up. They always fly in flat horizontal lines, never up or down.

We first saw that this was different when people land on the "underside" of a ship, only to fall down into it when they actually break in. But this....

They had a dogfight in space, and they actually moved in space. Spinning, going up and down and diagonally and sideways, shooting from underneath, everything. It's so simple, but it makes a difference. Realism is my god. You have no idea, I watched this and my eyes literally went wide.

I think I'm going to need a new icon.

Can't wait to see it.

I'd always wondered why they constantly get that little detail wrong.

Yes, it is a nice detail, and one that almost all SF misses. In almost all other SF, the spaceships don't fly like spaceships, they fly like airplanes. The only other exception I can think of offhand is Babylon 5 (but even in Bab 5, not all the ships fly like spaceships).

Overall, I am very impressed with Galactica. I can't speak highly enough of it. Taut direction, excellent storylines, great writing, superb acting... Olmos is absolutely fantastic as Adama, although everyone else is really good, too.

That's why I loved Firefly. Space was actually cool, not just something spaceships go through on their way to other planets.

I haven't been watching Battlestar Galactica, but I feel like I ought to. The same way I feel about Stargate SG-1. I think I'd enjoy it if I started watching, but I hate leaping in at the middle.

I'm not sure whether you're in the U.S. or the U.K. If you're in the U.K., jumping in now might be a bit difficult, but here in the U.S., I don't think it would take you long to get up to speed at all... we've had only four eps so far, and at the beginning of each ep, they do give a brief synopsis of what has transpired so far.

Thanks. I'm in the U.S., but have an abysmal sense of time, so I had no idea how long ago it started. =D

Yes, I was.

Or rather I was typing to you. Whatever.

Sometimes I get irked by using speaking metaphors in typing-land. I'm funny that way.

a common (and lame) explanation by many fans of sci-fi shows (which use relatively plane (get it, plane?) space choreography) is that the gravitational influence of the galactic plane makes it much easier to travel parallel to it. using today's propulsion technology, it doesn't make that much of a difference, but it's possible that futuristic propulsion sacrifices maneuverability in directions that take a ship out-of-plane for the type of speed that makes interstellar travel practical.

as for ships always meeting nose-to-nose, if everyone is travelling parallel to the galactic plane anyway, then there are basically two possible orientations. it is possible that the galactic powers have all agreed on a standard "up" to facilitate docking, etc, or at least that ships preparing to rendezvous agree on an "up" before they meet, and we just never see them adjusting their orientation.

This ties in with the fuming on my own journal about how the server I wanted to download stuff from (since my quota was almost completely untouched this month) went overcrowded and slooowww, and the other one had precious little by way of what I had originally intended to download. Anyway, I've read this comment of yours and I've noticed that the server had the Battlestar Galactica miniseries PLUS the new series that is currently aired. So I'm downloading it right now. (No, we don't have it on TV. Hungary's at the end of the known universe, SF-wise.)

If I end up disliking it, I'll beat you up with my combat umbrella, because it's lots of gigs and has been downloading since Shabbes ended and despite that, I'm only at ep 5 this far. =:D

Let me know if you need a download. I intend to have all of the eps by tomorrow, G-d willing. (I really have to because it's in a temporary requests directory!)

Have you watched any B5, BTW? If yes, how did you like it?
