If I say something along the lines of "drink your kool-aid, kids" and say that it's a scary line, do you know what I'm talking about?

Jim Jones.

I thought everyone knew about that.

Yes, I know, but I can totally understand why someone would not know. If I hadn't attended a very specific liberal arts college, I would probably not have been exposed to that particular part of recent history.

I don't quite see how it compares to 9/11 or WWII - Waco seems a good comparison though (meant nothing to me but I did a very quick google.)

Yes, I do. Calling Mr. Jones?

I know. I'm old enough to remember when that happened, too...

Me, too. I was in Grade 6, and we studied it in our social studies. We read things from the newspaper every day in that class. Progressive, private elementary school.

Heh whoops, it was Heaven's Gate that took their poison in pudding and juice, Jim Jones's nuts just did simultaneous cyanide. So many cults, how can one keep them all straight? :P

I didn't know until I saw the comments on here. :P

It takes me a minute. I've heard the "poison koolaid" spiel, but I don't (or didn't) know the provenance, and my first reaction is just as likely to be "yeah, that giant talking glass pitcher is pretty freaky".

Lol, I wasn't born in the 60s and I've known that phrase for--- years. "Don't drink the koolaid.'
I've never liked koolaid anyways, blech.

I'd actually never heard of that one before. Then again, I tend not to hear about those types of things.

Someone a few comments up mentioned pudding though. And I do remember the story about the cult who believed that a comet (hailbop) was sent by god to take them to heaven so a whole bunch of them ate poisoned tapioca pudding. Or something like that, I'm fuzzy on the details. But I found a link! http://anw.com/halebopp/heaven.htm

Yep. I think I've heard a few stories over the years relating to poisoned kool-aid, cults and mass-suicide including a cult who were told that a UFO would be taking them to a new place before they drank their death!

Took me a sec, but yeah. I didn't know the name of the cult or anything (now I do -- informative friends you've got!) but I'm aware of the event.

I didn't catch the reference, but once I saw someone mention Jim Jones I got it. However, the only reason I know about Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre is that I had to research it for a drama workshop I did last year that was based around it. Otherwise I wouldn't have heard of it.

I've been pouring Kool-Aid (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/K/Kool-Aid.html) a lot lately :)

Yup - I'd heard that one before and knew who it referred to. There was a similar reference in something I was watching a few weeks ago.
