One of the neighbors has an adorable miniature poodle, very friendly, looks like a little teddy bear, and he's got a name I've never heard on a dog before. I'm gonna shove it under a cut so you all can guess.

Rover - how fun! Fido, yeah. I guess there are still some dogs named Bowser, but it sounds pretty old-fashioned to me.

He's a very gentle and well-behaved dog for only a year old and I haven't seen him pull at his leash even a little. So no, I don't think so.

Is Bowser a dog name? I only ever heard it in Mario.

Yes, it is. I first heard of it through Bowser the Hound in the stories of Thornton Burgess (Mother West Wind etc.). My mother used to read those aloud to us. No explanation comes up via google - just that it's a 'strong, vigorous' name, but I think it might have because of bow-wow.

I'm disappointed that Felix for a cat isn't an ancient name for a c at (it was the cartoon..), as calling a felis catus 'happy or fortunate' is a nice, hopeful, pun.

Turned out it was yesterday's puzzle!  The clue was 'Classic pet name', and the answer was Fido.  I was initially undecided between Spot and Fido, but the cross-clues made it obvious very quickly.
