Yes, I read that and thought The Crying Game, too. But, uh, yes, the phrasing of the request was...wow.

Hopefully they take the advice as intended, and the situation is just awkwardly not-knowing-how-to-phrase-it rather than out-and-out transphobia.

Wow. There is some serious transphobia going on there, and kudos to you for answering them so calmly and trying to help them, but that kind of transphobia is so common these days :(
