I've gotten plants from New Garden Plants with joy (except for a major fail with UPS delivering and maybe i should have pushed more on getting every plant replaced). They have lots of shade options. Heuchera aka coral bells are hybridized for great and fun colors. They're evergreen (or everred, everpurple) here - not sure what they do in the snow, but some species are native to New York. Lenten Roses are also evergreen ground covers.
