in order to go to Film Forum Jr.

Is there an appropriate script one uses when saying "I would like to borrow your child to get me into a movie theater to watch Wallace and Grommit", or is that it? Would it improve matters if I happened to mention that this is something we used to do as a family with my mother before the pandemic? It's the truth, after all, but perhaps it's a little shameless?

You do not need to borrow a child to watch Wallace and Grommit. If questioned, just say you work for a children's magazine and you're doing a review.

Not knowing the child or the parents, I can only guess, but I'd make the offer to the child after clearing it with the parents, not to the parents (leaving the possibility they'll tell the child or pressure them instead of offering). So something like:
(to parents): "If you're willing, I'd like to ask your child about taking them to see W&G. Do you mind if I do?" (With or without adding "because I'd like to see it too" depending on whether you think it would nudge them into pressuring the child.)
(to child, if parents agree): "Would you like to go watch W&G tomorrow? I can take you if you would."

I used to borrow kids to take trick or treating, to be fair. It is not the most unusual child-borrowing I've heard of.

W&G: such great stuff! I have a small collection, I should watch it again. I was just discussing with a friend here on DW about watching Shaun the Sheep in-flight while going or coming across the Atlantic to Berlin back in '15, a few months before it released in the USA.

I used to occasionally get free tickets to kid things at work. I'd mention the tickets to friends with kids. They would often be happy to get free babysitting so they could have date night.

It likely would come off creepy if they aren't your friends though.

In your case, I'd say something like "Hey there's this Wallace and Grommet showing, do you think your kids would be interested in seeing it in a theater?" If the parents thought their kids would be interested you could suggest going as a group or you could offer to take them and let them have the date night. Again, not a tactic to use on people who aren't close friends.

I have been known to wander into a group of friends who are parents and ask if I can borrow a child to get me into the kids' film, pretty much exactly like that. But only when I'm already friends with the parents and know the kids well enough.
