conulyIt was 50% "memorial" and 50% "picnic". We actually did that sort of thing surprisingly often before Mommy got cancer - not usually "just because", more often for a thing like drumming circle or a summer concert.
And Jenn told a story that had totally slipped my mind, but which you all will appreciate. I honestly don't know how it slipped my mind at all, my mother told this story all the time, even when Jenn and I were much too young to understand any of it.
This story takes place during the Anita Hill scandal, which if you ask me ended in a total travesty of justice.
My mother was at the office, and she happened to overhear a male coworker going on and on about "What's the big deal? I'd think of it as a compliment!"
Wait, let me go back and set the scene. He was saying this with his back to her, as she was about to walk past him. Sit a second and picture this.
Now, as soon as he said "I'd think of it as a compliment" my mother, always quick on the mark - well, what would you do? What would you want to do?
Well, she did it! Reached out, grabbed his butt, and said "Hey, Dave, how are you?"
Shut him up for good.
