watching the nurse and the patient transport try to prop open doors with a garbage can and a moving set of drawers, all I could think is "This is the part that never seems to make it onto TV shows about working in a hospital". And it really ought to! It'd add a much-needed dose of realism to the genre, and could be used alternately to inject some humor or some sober reality about funding and construction, because wtf, who installed doors that can't be propped open on their own?

Anyway, my mother is back in the hospital and I'm not talking about it just now, just keeping people posted because you all sent such lovely cards, some of which made us laugh. I'm going over there now, in fact, with a quick stopover to deposit a check and also to pick up 65 spools of sewing machine thread from a yard sale at a steep discount - it's on the way, it's all right!

Perhaps the intent is to maintain a climate controlled environment on the other side of the doors? I work in a building with that situation and I have very frequently had to close doors that had been propped wide open. With enough foot traffic, you will have plenty of wiseacres who will prop open the doors and leave them that way.

other reasons that might be a design feature: harder to privacy violate through a closed door, best therefore to ensure the door cannot be (accidentally or quote-unquote accidentally) left open
