Cried buckets. Watched it again with just Eva and Jenn. Cried some more.

The specific shape of the family problem to solve was made abundantly clear to me the first time we were told that "we don't talk about Bruno", though Jenn read something (link hopefully coming) about a Colombian saying it was reminiscent of how there are some war related topics people just don't talk about. I don't think that context necessarily negates my interpretation, but I want to read the thing she read first.

On first watch Eva was vocal about her opinion that the songs were a little too Lin-Manuel Miranda (she's not a big fan) and, coincidentally, her favorite songs were my absolute least favorite. But, idk, not only do I think that some of those songs might grow on her, I also think that both the animation and the lyrics for We Don't Talk About Bruno are pretty amazing. Love it or hate it, you have to give them their credit for that one.

We saw "Encanto" last week in the theater, and again yesterday from our living room sofa. It's a fascinating conceit, with gorgeous animation and good songs, although it didn't WOW me the way "Coco" did. (My mother finally saw "Coco" this week, on my recommendation, and everybody cried, as expected.) After it was over, [personal profile] shalmestere looked up the closing-credits song ("Dos oruguitas/dos mariposas", which is also used a couple of times as background music during the movie); I think that's her favorite track.

Then for something completely different (except for the frequent switching between Spanish and English), we went to the theater to see "West Side Story" last night. Which is beautifully done, and makes several of the characters more interesting and complex than I remember from the 1961 movie. Rita Moreno, who played Anita in 1961, returns sixty years later to play Doc's widow and Tony's mentor.

While I didn't cry buckets, it definitely misted me up. Love Lin-Manuel's work! We decided to brave it and saw it a week ago in the theater.
