I'm starting to believe that publishers are really cutting back on their editors, plus requiring a sample chapter rather than a full manuscript, and the result is really strong, well workshopped opening chapters and shit endings.
I've gotten to seeing what reviewers thought (and inconclusive doesn't count) before starting on something. Well, mostly, anyway. (With TV, I did chance Debris and wonder if they do know where it was going.)
Possible, though in these few cases they're all middle entries in trilogies that end on cliffhangers I just don't like for plot reasons. The writing is solid enough.
It is one of the two series I'm most specifically !!!!ing about, yes.
To be clear, I think the writing was pretty good, she confirmed at least one of my personal fan theories, and I strongly suspect she'll go ahead in the third book to confirm at least two more.
And the cliffhanger ending is obviously a cliffhanger, because there's no way that SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER, so clearly El is gonna pull another high-powered magical miracle out of her ass like the last time. In fact, fair's fair, I think the foreshadowing for what's almost certainly happening in the next book has been pretty neatly set up since the first one.
But god, ugh, what a way to end a book.
And the other one I'm complaining about, same thing - why are you gonna do this to me?
Will do! My partner just finished it, and has not expressed any indications of screaming in frustration, just looking up the status of Book 3. He's a pretty patient guy, though.
Alas, I've no reason to think that we will ever find out! Though, I did appreciate with Dark Angel that we eventually found out broadly what would have happened in season three had they made one, which would have helped season two look less silly.
I did not scream (and generally enjoyed the book, but appreciated the warning). Will probably reread Book 1 before Book 3 comes out, since I'm a bit less clear on what's being foreshadowed.
