My experience is that you'll do fine. Nails are protective, and they'll do their job with dogged persistence. I stubbed my other big toe yesterday and turned back some of the nail. It's not going to fall off, but it is turning interesting colors.
Which, as a writer, gave me an idea. A character in a novel I'm writing now wants to hide his menial background, but he damaged some nails doing physical labor. They won't look normal quickly, so how does he explain his beat-up hands?
