A couple of years ago we were all directed to observe Veterans day ON Veterans day. It used to be generally observed on Monday that week, but not any more. :P

It can't be punted to Monday: 11/11/11 it must be. It's one of the only Federal holidays that stay that way, along with Christmas and New Year's Day.

I also remember it being a Monday holiday in years past and was surprised that both kids (high school and uni) had it off today instead of Monday.

No, not Veterans Day, that's always the 11th of November.

I don't think so. I know for a fact that my mother was thrown off when they first started switching to observing it on Mondays because the 11th is her mother's birthday, and therefore she missed calling her!

I don't think so. My mother was very thrown off one year - she was accustomed to calling her mother on Veteran's Day because Bonnemaman was born November 11th, and the calendar had switched to listing Veteran's Day Observed on a Monday, so she missed calling her mother on the right day.

Come to think of it, I remember as a kid it might not have been, I think I remember my mother being angry about it being shifted, because of the symbolism of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Per Wikipedia: "Although originally scheduled for celebration on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October (October 25, 1971;[10] October 23, 1972; October 22, 1973; October 28, 1974; October 27, 1975; October 25, 1976, and October 24, 1977). In 1978, it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11.

While the legal holiday remains on November 11, if that date happens to be on a Saturday or Sunday, then organizations that formally observe the holiday will normally be closed on the adjacent Friday or Monday, respectively.

Non-essential federal government offices are closed. No mail is delivered. All federal workers are paid for the holiday; those who are required to work on the holiday sometimes receive holiday pay for that day in addition to their wages."

It never made any difference for us until we had son_of_wendelah in school. It wasn't a paid holiday for me, ever. We did get holiday time for Memorial Day if we had to work. Hospitals never close...

I think when it's celebrated and what is and is not closed goes by which state you're in.

We (local gov't) always take it on the day it falls. We only get a Monday if the 11th is a Sunday.
