I don't know why taking two buses seems like such a great hardship compared to taking a bus AND a boat AND a train or more for the same amount of time, but it does.

Hee. I think it depends on how much you like buses? I'd consider it hardship, because I hate buses. Trains and boats I can read on and I don't mind. Buses not so much. Also I don't trust them -- incredibly dangerous things.

a lot of the time when I go to the Mission (Latin neighborhood in San Francisco) there are Avon ladies handing out free catalogs.

Home items are getting smarter and creepier, like it or not

I definitely don't like it.

Those would all suck for me.

Ferries = motion sickness, buses = tremendous time waste along never-ending circuitous routes to go places that take minutes via one's own transportation, trains = deeply discomfiting/loud/noisy/weird (then again, I'm thinking of NYC subways; I don't recall using the LIRR).

The only problem with NY bus drivers is how they take things on two wheels, especially corners. So buses always feel like they'll tip. I've spent my whole life telling myself it's just an adventure, like what you see on The Dukes of Hazard, to get through it.

Me, neither. One reason I dread moving is the current place isn't hooked up to smart-anything, so I worry if, without any former or current tenant's knowledge perhaps, the next place will be.

True on both counts. I work in Jamaica where there's a ton of them -- they try to kill pedesterians.
