The NY Times has an article up on the proposed decoration change at the Holland Tunnel.

And all I can think, looking at the picture, is that those are some ugly decorations. Also quasi-religious, but seriously, they're the drabbest, ugliest tree and wreaths you'll ever imagine. So yes, I went to the poll, and first of all there's no option up for "replace the decorations entirely with something pretty or just go without" and secondly they don't seem to understand the distinction between checkboxes and bulletpoints.

And if you say this, somebody's bound to say something about holiday spirit or some nonsense, but I doubt anybody is really made more cheerful by looking at those poor things. We should just put them out of their misery and replace them with snowflakes. Nice, non-denominational snowflakes that happen, almost incidentally, not to look like the winter blues personified.

I'm pretty sure that our road authorities do garlands over each tollbooth, which eases back the bother of trying to work out the symmetry of things.

(Yes, I know we live in a land of summer where snow and pines and fires are completely ridiculous, but still. We have two hundred and twenty five years up against the better part of a millenium of tradition, and we've only started even considering alternatives in the last fifty years - if that.)

To me it looks like people had some nice intentions, but then something went terribly wrong in committee. More tasteful decorations might be nice, but in the very least that tree has GOT to move.

But if they were going to keep what they have, they should get rid of the tree and the second wreath completely. The tree won't look any better on the A. They mentioned the OCD factor, and putting on the A won't help unless they change it's shape.
