Trump backs down, orders end to family separations at U.S. border

Now we're supposed to be grateful that families are being detained together, I guess. Do any of us seriously believe conditions are much better in family detention? It's still better than separating children from their parents, but it's not great.

Their new narrative is that people seeking asylum are "invaders".
*shakes head*
Oh, and Trump is apparently expecting to be hoisted up and carried around like a hero because he did this.
UGH.

He gets no cookies for 'solving' the problem he created. And that's in scare quotes because what are they doing with the kids they've already stolen?

Also, it's /still/ not legal to detain a family for more than 20 days, so I'm not clear on how this solves anything.

He had a talk with some Republican leaders last night. I'm surprised they talked him into not kidnapping children any more. The less said about his behavior leading up to last night the better.

Not to mention they're not going to rush in reuniting these kids. He's basically saying "oh, fine," and scaling back, not actually halting anything.

The whole thing is so despicable. It literally makes me want to cry.

Someone pointed out on Book of Faces that he may be trying to force a confrontation with the judiciary, because as you say, it's still not legal to detain them for more than 20 days, but his EO says they can be detained indefinitely.

And it's not retroactive, so there's no plan for fixing what's already been broken.

Suggested headline (from MetaFilter): "Trump Orders Bigger Cages."

There is also no plan whatsoever for reuniting existing families with their children.

This is an attempt to find the sweet spot that's not horrific enough to inspire public protests, but is still harsh enough to use as a bargaining chip to get their chosen tax breaks through Congress.

Someone on FB called suggested it's a Syndrome Ploy: create a problem specifically and for no reason other than so you can be lauded as a hero by solving it. I'm terrified of how many people may be fooled by it.

The plan for indefinate child detention in family detentiion centers that don't exist yet is illegal unless the Cruz bill passes or they get the Florez ruling overturned. There is no plan for returning children and they've already deported some of the parents. It looks suspiciously like this Executive order is serving the duel purpose of PR for dispelling protesters and a plan to hold the kidnapped children hostage in internment camps until the Cruz Bill is forced through.

Yeah. I saw an interesting take on it possibly being an attempt to win by losing - lose the court case but force the status quo as a response to the (unimplementable) EO.

I see a lot of people being Not Fooled. Here's hoping we can all keep the pressure on.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that will try to use this as momentum to get their own personal version of hell passed for the people that are trying to claim asylum or get away from trouble. Because it can't be as bad as what we just went through, right?

Warning for terrifying callousness and casual cruelty--A Physician in South Texas on an Unnerving Encounter with an Eight-Year-Old Boy in Immigration Detention. (Quoting a small bit, and not one of the worst parts.)
“I asked the clinician, ‘When is this child going to be reunited with his parents?’ He was evasive. First it was ‘Oh, well, we don’t know.’ And then it was ‘Well, he won’t be reunited with his parents unless he behaves.’ The lack of compassion was scary, and it didn’t seem like there was really a plan.
Burn them all down, and heap shame and disgust on every ICE employee and contractor until they're afraid to show their faces in public.

It's hell. Immigration camps have always been hell, because immigrants are not covered by the same legal protections as citizens. In a way, we're lucky to have Trump, because until he got involved with immigrant detention no one cared about it. Perhaps the wave of indignation will cause detention to become more tolerable and stay that way after he's gone.

There's also the question as to whether families can be reunited, but this may already have been addressed in the comments.
