Aaaaaaand it's things like this is why I wrote that thing about W-2 vs 1099-MISC work. This clever hack of using payroll taxes to replace income taxes incentivises employers to use 1099-MISC over W-2. I mean, more than they already do. Workers on a 1099-MISC are definitely not employees, and definitionally not on payroll; if you make your W-2 employees 1099-MISC contractors, you don't have to pay one red dime of payroll tax for them.

Now, there are things that incline firms to prefer employees over contractors – number one being the IRS rules on misclassification. But there's this huge trend towards using contracting to get out of expenses that already adhere to payrolls. This just increases those expenses, and gives employers even more reason to figure out how to use contractors over employees.

Let's not lose the plot: the reason a Vox writer is proposing this ridiculous get-around – and it might be the best of available options – is because anti-government vandals have colonized our government. There's very little one can do to protect a government from the people who instantiate it, and, by gum, we in the US have done all that I know there is to be done.

It might be good to start over from scratch, but what will that do to protect us from the next plutocrats' tax bill?
