[I was telling a friend of mine about how “A Christmas Carol” wasn't as weird as it seemed:  Even now, in the tune “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,”

        There'll be parties for hosting
        Marshmallows for toasting
        And caroling out in the snow
        There'll be scary ghost stories
        And tales of the glories of the
        Christmases long, long ago…

“There'll be” - what?!  Yes - ghost stories were a Victorian Christmas tradition, sort of a memento mori; on Christmas Eve the ghosts of the departed may visit the living, and do.]
