Rackham is among my favorite illustrators of the period, right up there with Milo Winter.

Love that holiday photo and story.

ETA: Re the bread -- Janni has a binder with her grandmother's recipes. Unless you know what you're doing, nothing will come out right because a) measurements use the tumbler glasses she happened to have in her Brooklyn apartment and b) she always left out or misstated an ingredient to keep her sister from stealing her recipes.

Without going too deeply into the use of "forgotten" instead of "I didn't know about," I will remark that I have an entire book (2004: Ada Blackjack: A True Story of Survival in the Arctic) about Blackjack, and she is mentioned in accounts of polar strandings, rescues, and exploration. (As is Vic the cat, who survived and was rescued with her, yet another cat who survived under incredibly hard conditions.)

“If policymakers are to cover the true cost of human epidemics like obesity, diabetes and cancer,…then a shift from subsidisation to taxation of the meat industry looks inevitable….”

My dog, but the misinformation from the sugar and grain industries have done their disservice. Those are the causes of the emboldened diseases, according to quite a bit of evidence, not meat.

I would also question which subsidies they propose to remove. Those supporting CAFO feed lots? Sure. Those supporting integrating animals in more traditional soil restoration, though (like the Amish and others have done for decades), that would exacerbate ACC. There is no such thing as resilient and sustainable agriculture without an herbivorous component.

Sorry, had to rant.
