Eva was in her school talent show.
Mar. 6th, 2014 08:25 amShe was one of the two masters of ceremony (which involved reciting an abridged version of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, the closing lines of which brought down the house. The show was a bit delayed due to weather) and she was a narrator in a skit, and she sang two songs with the chorus, and she recited "Hope is the Thing with Feathers", and I do hope Emily Dickenson doesn't mind if I screwed up the capitalization there.
This whole production involved us writing out her speech not once, nor twice, but three different times on index cards and getting her some new shoes and tights. It also involved me going to watch it. Since the theme was ostensibly "Respect For All" they started not with the Pledge of Allegience but with a review of the DoE's non-discrimination policy. I was happy to note that NYC public schools do not discriminate against anybody at any time for any reason. I was somewhat less happy at the fact that we had to listen to a seven year old stumble through an inclusively interminable list of each and every person the schools don't discriminate against instead of just saying "we don't discriminate against anybody". It was that long.
Evangeline rocked, some of her classmates can really sing, and it is surprising how many third graders have mad dance skills. Surprising and adorable.
