It's, um, pretty dismal.
I mean, I already had a pessimistic outlook, and I still think it's shockingly depressing. The only real solution, of course, is to spend money. To raise taxes on the very wealthy and then use that money to hire people to perform necessary repairs and maintenance on our various roads, bridges, dams, levees, public buildings, parks....
The alternative, letting it go until it HAS to be fixed will, as everybody who has ever really been poor knows, cost a heck of a lot more in the long run. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A stitch in time saves nine. Make hay while the sun shines. You're supposed to be able to find a pithy aphorism for every point of view, but do you know, I can't think of one bit of folk wisdom that says "sure, handle it later"? And yet*....
* I'm making a point here. If you DO think of such an aphorism, by all means, go ahead and keep it to yourself!
