Friday, I read The Ghosts of Luckless Gulch to Evangeline on the train. LONG book, I skipped a lot of the endless narration.

When we were done, Evangeline said two things. First, "It seems like there's a lot of guys and only one girl". (Correctamundo, my little feminist. And we wonder why the nieces STILL will rave about how in Rapunzel's Revenge she saves herself.) Secondly, "I wish I knew what that little girl's name was, though."

Seriously? I must've said it 30 times. But then, it's the train....

Have you and the girlies seen Ever After (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ever_After)? That's a great one for Girl Power, a Cinderella story in which Cinderella is a heroine rather than a victim, and it's also quite hilarious.

Did Eva remember having heard the little girl's name when you reminded her? My spidey-sense is wondering if she's specifically having difficulty matching up which pronouns refer to which proper nouns, especially when she's listening instead of reading and thus can't check back. I suspect she'd be able to do better on a test, where she was focused on discerning the differences, than she does in the hurly-burly of ordinary life .

It's possible that she is guessing rather than really *getting* a lot of what goes on, and doesn't even know it, because she's never known different, and it's worked well enough up till now. You might ask her, though, if she thinks she has more trouble than most people her age in figuring out what people really mean when they're talking, and otherwise try to lead into her telling you about her perceptions. There's really no way to know what's going on with her other than to ask her.
