Date: 2009-09-09 07:07 am (UTC)using cards is a really bad methodology. The kids have probably seen decks of cards. Cards are sorted by color and then divided once more into two groups. After all, there are red cards and black cards. So, cards encourages sorting by color.
Second, this seems like exactly a set-up for creating a bunch of kids who do not understand or recognize privilege. I expect the Black kids hear about race because their parents have to explain it. After all, they will face discrimination. They will face racists. I had to learn about anti-semitism from a young age, because it was a real risk. But the Christian kids don't need to learn about it til they're older. And the White kids don't need to learn about races and bigotry until they're older. And now you have a crop of kids who say things about how we should all be color-blind and the problem is people bringing up race and not understanding that minorities can't just ignore race because other people don't let them. Until we have far fewer racists in our society, we can't just ignore race.
I hope I explained that well enough to be clear. It's hard for me to tell. But I need to head to bed.
