For the record, there *was* one specific person who prompted this by... well, by being upset at me, and with good reason, but I don't want to deal with that anymore. This person knows who s/he is, I'm sure, or at least can figure it out.
However, I'd intended to trim the list for months, and I just hadn't. What I basically did is I cut out the people who are deleted and/or never update for starters (which doesn't help my goal of limiting posts, but it did get rid of the clutter), and then I went and cut out people whom I mostly or always skim. I don't think that's fair to them, or to anybody else whom I feel closer to but can't really pay attention to because I'm busy skimming everybody else!
And like I said, everybody and their dog can friend me, I don't mind. Hitler could friend me, and I wouldn't mind, so youse guys (whom I like, unlike Hitler) can certainly keep me friended!
Just, if you've been cut (or suspect you have been) and have a really cool link to show me (it happens), remember that just posting it in your journal won't work anymore, that's the only difference.
