And it's not just that the time-outs lost their effectiveness. I mean, they did - but I want to emphasize that I actually believe that their frequency and severity (getting out of proportion to the crime) were making her behaviour worse - she was not just taking gum, but actively hiding it, and trying to lie to me when I called her out on it, and fighting me over removing it from her mouth, and suchlike, and doing it more often instead of less.
If she were holding steady, that'd be bad enough, but it got worse instead. I see that in hindsight, but then it just frustrated me.
