Bert and Ernie counting fruit...
Feb. 24th, 2007 08:48 pmWherein Bert can't enjoy sorting paper clips because Ernie is too busy counting fruit.
They always were my favorite characters! *curls up to watch*
On the subject of counting things that aren't there... Yesterday, I had told Ana that she could have one Fig Newton when we got home. She's already had a lot of treats that day (that week!), so restricting her to a single Newton was more than reasonable.
She didn't even get the cookie - she had a bit of a meltdown after I woke her to get off the bus, and when she calmed down she forgot all about it anyway.
But prior to this, we had the following conversation:
Ana: Maybe... maybe I could have two cookies.
Me: (carefully refraining from telling her that a cookie may be just a cookie, but a Fig Newton is fruit and cake) No, Ana, you can have one cookie.
Ana: But I could have two!
Me: Or you could have none....
Ana: Oh.
...
Maybe I could have one outside and one inside. That makes two!
Me: No. You can only have one cookie.
Ana: No, no, no. I could have one outside and one inside, and that is two!
Me: Yes, it is two, but you can't have two cookies. You can only have one cookie.
Ana: No, no, Connie, listen. I could have one cookie outside, and another cookie inside. Two cookies!
Me: Ana, you're not a lawyer. You don't get to do this.
Ana: I do get to! I can have one outside and one inside, right? Then it's two!
Me: Or, you could have no cookies outside, and no cookies inside. That's two, isn't it?
Ana: *frowning* No, Connie. That's not two. That's NONE.
Me: Oh. You're right, it is. But you still can't have two cookies.
Ana: No, no-
Me: NO.
Then she started whining a bit and I told her that if she kept it up, we'd have to get off the bus and wait for the next one. And she shut up about it. And fell asleep.
